Shokugeki as a street fight. I love it.

 

Shinomiya was awfully deferential to Dojima. Hinako too.

 

We saw before how much of a character Hinako could be during her session with Souma and Megumi, but wow! She is hilarious.

 

Faking a fake accent speaking Japanese sounds so fake.

 

Good for Megumi for being mad at Souma for butting in. And she does have a rural accent!

 

The main cooking music theme was used to great nostalgic effect as Megumi tried to plan a dish that was her very own. It got to my shriveled up heart.

 

Yeah, I don't know how long I'd stand that gibbering from Hinako either.

Megumi gains confidence from the first day of training camp, but Chef Shinomiya expels her, angering Souma.

Heh.

Did we really need that flash-forward halfway through the episode showing Megumi getting expelled? What the hell was that about?

 

Yeah, I can see how Isshiki and Doujima could get along with all that masculine nakedness going on.

 

Souma figured it out, with a little help from Doujima, that Erina was even faster than he was at preparing all those meals.

 

I love well-developed characters! Even just the little accident of bumping into each other in the hallway gave us many good gags and jokes between Souma, Erina and Hisako.

10 Second Anime - Shokugeki no Soma - Episode 9



Souma figures out a dish to impress Hinako and forge a rivalry with Takumi. The first day of camp isn't over yet for the students after their tests.

Heh.

Kaki no tane (柿の種 - literally persimmon seed). So that's what the Japanese call that rice snack. I love those things. So does Hinako, apparently.

 

As I thought, Hinako has a thing for putting things on people's heads in her foodgasm hallucinations.

 

Souma sure does play dirty. Or clever. Or sneaky. However you want to put it. Hinako was snacking on something tasty, so why not try to beat Takumi's dish with it? It was the only way to make crunchy batter with what they had on hand too.

 

The Aldini's may have worked in a trattoria, but he's not going to beat a Japanese diner for speed.

At the Totsuki elimination training camp Souma learns that others have practical kitchen experience too, like the Aldini twins.

Heh.

This Totsuki school needs to do things in a big flashy way. They can't just slowly expel kids throughout the school year. Oh no. They have to do it in extreme situations in a very public manner. Culling may be cruel, but it doesn't have to be boring.

 

We've been treated to only a few students' and teachers' quirky foodgasms, so what better way to keep the show interesting than having alumni come in and show off their weird inner visualizations of their foodgasms. This Hinako lady stuck a duck head on Placido Domingo, for crying out loud. I wonder if that's her thing.

 

Without Souma at the Donmono Research Club, I guess Ikumi doesn't have to dress girly prim and proper in her uniform anymore, but her embarrassed feelings for him are still there.

10 Second Anime - Shokugeki no Soma - Episode 7

Souma and Ikumi battle over cooking the best donburi using beef. The quality of the beef does not decide the contest.

Heh.

We had a quick bit of flavor of what these Shokugeki look like when Erina demolished the sumo guy's club, but we got the full ceremony with Souma and Ikumi. It's like a boxing match with an emcee, a ring, and elaborate entrances.

 

Ikumi wears so little, but I guess what little she does wear has to have an impact. I was partial to the cowboy outfit myself.

 

Ikumi's reputation for choosing meat and butchering it were well deserved.

Souma learns about his dorm's ingredients facilities and decides to save the Food Bowl Research Society from Ikumi the Meat Master.

Heh.

I wondered how Isshiki handled his nudity outside of the kitchen and I suppose sporting a fundoshi is an elegant solution.

 

Aw, so Megumi suffers from performance anxiety, which is why her practical grades are so poor.

 

Not much in the way of nudity inducing foodgasms this week. Souma must not have figured out how to make a signature food bowl.

 

Actually, that's understandable, plus why he was experimenting with so many kinds of dishes - he wanted to join the donmono (bowl things) research society to learn something new to add to the selections for his family diner. He may have flashes of brilliance for improvising, but those flashes come from connecting all his past experiments and experiences with the ingredients on hand.

 

Souma's pride as a "diner brat" pushed him into challenging Ikumi at his first Shokugeki.
