Geekisms permeate the mainstream culture, even in a story about counter-cultural nudism.

It's no surprise that old people don't like young people, even in a supposedly accepting group of "naturists." What drew my attention to the story (no, not the naked people, because nudists don't lie when they say their associations are not about sex, seriously, you guys) was the nice little pun the author threw in the middle of the article.

Despite a mutual interest in a sustaining a shared cause, the nudebies acknowledge a rift between the generations.

 "Nudebies," heh. From newbies, or n00bs, shortened from "new bulletin board system members." How many people even know that "new bbs" members came from the ancient days of the 1980's? Geekisms! Love it!

The Mars Reconnaissance Observer captured the landing site of the hulking Rover, and one can follow its tracks to its current location. It seems to have gone about 2000 feet since its landing. From NASA:

NASA's Mars Science Laboratory rover Curiosity appears as a bluish dot near the lower right corner of this enhanced-color view from the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The rover's tracks are visible extending from the landing site, "Bradbury Landing," in the left half of the scene. Two bright, relatively blue spots surrounded by darker patches are where the Mars Science Laboratory spacecraft's landing jets cleared away reddish surface dust at the landing site. North is toward the top. For scale, the two parallel lines of the wheel tracks are about 10 feet (3 meters) apart.

Very cool pictures of crashed planes where all aboard survived.

All the wrecks are still in place today, and a German photographer captured them in a new photo book.

At first glance, "Happy End" may not seem like the most natural title for pictures of wrecked planes in forbidding landscapes, but German photographer Dietmar Eckell has a very positive outlook on what these photos represent. As described by Eckell, these pictures document 'miracles' in aviation history: forced landings where everyone on board survived and was rescued from the remote locations.

I made this animated gif with BLINK, Microsoft's answer to Vine. Not quite a smooth sharing process.

So, there it is. I masked out the rest of the picture, so that only the rooster is looping.

The app and the interface is actually great, easy to use, and kind of fun.

The problem, at least on the Surface RT, came from trying to upload this gif to Twitter, both through the browser, and through the native app. Just wouldn't do it. Photobucket didn't care and handled it like a boss, both through uploading from its own Win8 app, and through the browser. Which is odd, since Photobucket is the photo sharing engine for Twitter, so something is up on the Twitter processing side of things.

Incidentally, BLINK is an app coming out of Microsoft's research arm in so.cl. Not only can you export your little 10 second or less creations as a gif, but you can upload them to BLINK in their native video formats.

UPDATE: Twitter no longer accepts animated gifs. From the troubleshooting support page:

Check your file type. Twitter supports JPEG, GIF, and PNG file formats. We do not support animated GIFs. All existing animated GIF images will be left as they are, but no new ones can be uploaded. [emphasis added]

So, this is user error, or more like, user ignorance. I would like to know when that changed.
