Did I see Hyogo unleashed? Aw, only partial underboob. You're not going to beat the Sex Witch unless you're at full strength, Hyogo-kun!

What do they make those fans out of? Houkouin just sliced right through Chiharu's nunchakus.

You know, if I got my arm sliced off, I'd run away too. But I wouldn't stick around just long enough to say the guy who did it was "Interesting/amusing." He's a bit more than that...

Lots of steam-powered mecha action. Piercing their high pressure boilers? Can they do that?

Shigeyoshi makes quick work of the foreigners. Houkouin kidnaps Kiriko to awaken the demon in Keiichiro. Keiichiro, Hyogo and Chiharu go to rescue her.

Heh.

Shigeyoshi remembers how to destroy Black Ships. But he's gone off the deep end in wanting the demons inhabiting the Onigami to destroy Japan and make them all "perfect" in their demonic hellfire. No wonder he was put in prison.

I thought Kiriko had all this Flower Spray training, so why is the Sex Witch able to affect her with her sexy touching? I don't much like this damsel in distress version of Kiriko.

Even in trying times, Ryoma knows how to keep a positive attitude.

Kiriko gets on a boat. The Shinsengumi go on the attack. The foreigners also attack Nagasaki. Keiichiro wakes up.

Heh.

The pirate Marika shows up again, if only to provide some salty spray for rainbows. I guess she doesn't get airsick, just seasick. And she has a name for our colorful stranger: Ryoma. Who knows if that's his real name.

Japanese people, always running to the sea to scream at it, or get on a boat to gain perspective on their problems.

The Shinsengumi appear to be that good. Hyogo is all messed up, but Soji is still nice and neat. If it weren't for whatever disease she has, probably tuberculosis, she would have won that sword fight in style. I think Hyogo would fight better if she didn't constrain herself. Unleash those sweater puppies! It's important to breathe properly and deeply for any kind of bodily exertion...

This Ryoma guy really does have game. Too bad Kiriko isn't stressing about being in love with Keiichiro; she's stressing out about her conflicted priorities for her mission to bring the Tokogawa heir back to Edo.

It's a small world after all...

Two couples have awkward feelings. The Sex Witch infiltrates the bath house. Kiriko joins Susanoo, but the demon awakens instead.

Houkouin the Sex Witch knows the best kind of attack is one where you don't even have to get your hands dirty. With all the awkward teenage feelings going around, it was easy to exploit Kiriko's own uncertain feelings and cause the demon to awaken and lose control.

It wouldn't have been that interesting if Kiriko got her turn in Susanoo and they just kicked ass. Where's the drama in that?

I didn't know that Chiharu had such a popular look, that someone in town could have the same outfit and hairstyle.

Keiichiro is such a typical teenage male. He starts kissing his girlfriend, and then that's all he wants to do, while Kiriko is typical teenage female in wanting each kiss to have a special meaning or emotion. Kids.

Houkouin cleans up nice, huh? Just shows what horrible makeup and a bad attitude can do to a pretty girl's face.

A colorful stranger steals Keiichiro's Tokugawa seal. He tries to win it back, but ends up losing Kiriko to foreigners. He and the stranger rescue her from Dejima island.

Heh.

If you think Kiriko hasn't been getting naked enough since the first episode, then this episode is just for you. And even if you think her amount of fanservice has been fine, this episode is still just for you.

Those nasty foreigners. Just selling whatever they got to whomever has money. I mean, who does that?

Interesting that the rock-paper-scissors game uses a gun instead of scissors. I guess it shoots right through paper.

Poor Hyakusuke. He got his Newtonian telescope destroyed and lost his awesome peeping location thanks to those horny foreigners.

Even though this is supposed to be an alternative history, it looks like we'll get our Meiji Restoration anyway, even if Keiichiro becomes the new shogun. Part of dismantling the shogunate under the emperor was opening Japan up for free trade.

So, uh, are all Japanese just terrible at rock-paper-scissors, or just the ones with wavering feelings in this episode? Kiriko wasn't the only one losing her shirt, so to speak.

The Iga village "prince" visits Kiriko and Grandma. The Shinsengumi attack Nagasaki. Hyogo fights together with Keiichiro.

Heh.

The story with Keiichiro and Kiriko picks up right after she broke his curse 2 episodes ago. Which means Keiichiro and Hyakusuke need to have their hair cut by sexy girls. Kiriko and Chiharu are not amused.

This "prince" guy is like every good-looking guy character who's full of himself. At least he's actually skilled. Also, he's impressed with Keiichiro's strength in breaking his bonds. Perhaps there's more to this bastard heir to the Shogun, and he can entrust "his" Kiriko to him.

Susanoo takes on the personality of the virgin in the cockpit with Keiichiro? So that last character before the transformation should be interpreted as "lay waste, devastate" instead of "run wild." Susanoo went Beast Mode because Chiharu was at the controls. With Hyogo, we have a dual wielding sword slasher.

Shigeyoshi may be bad, but he has his reasons. The prime minister has large appetites, and large secrets. Shigeyoshi's onigami is reawakened in a baptism by blood.

Hmm.

I like how we see what's going on with the Shogunate in turmoil from an inside out perspective. Shigeyoshi, supposedly our Big Bad, took some harsh action against the Black Ships, which in this alternative history actually fired on the coastal cities, but was imprisoned for his rashness, as opposed to his loyalty to the shogun. In the present, he has rejoined the ill shogun's inner council.

This rashness never went away, and Shigeyoshi confronts the shogun himself over his odd instructions relayed by the prime minister, who blatantly appears to be abusing his position, that he's taking a new concubine. He may have had an ally in the put-upon Matsudaira, the chief of staff, but their respective outlooks on life would have definitely clashed. As it is, he finds out what the prime minister has been hiding, and why the shogun has been giving such odd orders: he's dead, and has been for some time. Why the Iga ninjas know this and didn't tell anyone is something that needs to be answered.

I'm not sure how much Shigeyoshi's bloodlust comes from his own personality, and how much of it is influenced by the onigami he is bonded to. Several times we see that Shigeyoshi is possessed by Takemikazuchi, but that could also be his affinity to the self-willed puppet. Or some combination. It's enough for the story that they're connected.

While taking out the prime minister for his acts of disloyalty to the Shogunate by furthering his appetites and ambitions is the right thing to do, Shigeyoshi being consumed by wrath and killing everyone in the palace, and then going after Keiichiro and his onigami is going too far. I guess every revolutionary who engineers a palace coup starts out with noble goals and intentions, before it all turns into mass murder.

Heh.

Shigeyoshi's personal military police, or Shinsengumi, have all the elements of a harem, down to the overplayful one teasing the others.

The possibility of Grandma dying soon makes Kiriko examine her role in protecting Keiichiro's virginity. The curse cure is a virgin kiss? Grandma always had that eye patch.

Heh.

Way to troll our heartstrings. A mackerel bone caused Grandma's coughing and bleeding, not some wasting disease.

They mined a lot of material out of the cure for Keiichiro's curse of breaking out when he lusts after a woman. A virgin kiss is all it takes, but Kiriko says that if Keiichiro got into that situation, he'd probably lose his virginity at the same time. Grandma had the best line: "It's been so long, it's probably grown back already!" Of course, a maiden's kiss has to be about feelings, so a desperate Keiichiro got what he deserved from Kiriko. Well, the boy learns how to treat women, eventually.

I think it's pretty clear Hyakusuke is going to end up with Chiharu. He's so mean, making her have feelings for him because he defended her honor, or something.

The Lantern Festival was a good device for Grandma to tell Kiriko about his backstory and his mother, which also reinforced her mistaken idea that Grandma was going to die soon and had to tell her all this stuff. Again, all that coughing up blood business was well done.

And at the end, when Keiichiro finds his curse gone, he wonders how it happened. If Chiharu didn't do it, did Grandma really steal a kiss?

Oh, Japan. You sure do love your gender bending stories, don't you. But you can't fool Hyakusuke if that "man" is wearing high-heeled boots.

So, uh, do all flying female pirates have to be named Marika? At least this one has rokketto panchi!

How did that Marika lady know Susanoo was under the bathhouse? We finally got to see where Susanoo "lives" down there, too.

Granny ninja is wily in the ways of men's and women's clothing, and she always gets what she wants. Like a new bathhouse worker.

荒 (arai), the last character shown on the pilot's screen before Susanoo turns into steam-powered Mecha Godzilla means wild, violent, or rough. As a verb, it could mean run wild, devastate, or lay waste. Beast mode sounds good to me.

I'm having too much fun with this show. The mix of gag humor, sexy girls, and action scenes has me already waiting for next week's episode. I'm so excited, I may need a slap in the face to get a hold of myself.

A discovered hero gets jammed into a big robot. No, not that show. Not that other show either. This one has Kiriko the ninja.

Why yes, there seem to be a few shows where some dude finds himself stuck into a big robot to fight against bad guys. This is another one, except it takes place in 1870's Nagasaki as if the Meiji Restoration never happened.

Our hero, the illegitimate son of the Tokugawa Shogun, lives in a bath house, with all that implies.

The big robots run on steam power, so naturally his big robot is kept underneath the bath house where all the hot springs are.

Our main character is as dumb as a post, likes to fight, and his weapon of choice is a sledge hammer.

Oh, and he has an actual key, instead of some magic gun that just appears in hand, that he has to jam into some hole, and all these high security people just let him waltz right into a Titan rocket because of it... Ahem. That's some other show that pissed me off. Sorry. All these accidental robot pilot shows are blending together. See? Actual key.
