Graduation and looking forward to attending high school lets our gourmet girls reminisce about the past and enjoy the present, with good food, of course. Season Finale.

All's well that ends well. The girls make it into the school of their choice. The other prep school girls also make it, so Kirin already has a whole gaggle of girlfriends when she starts school in a new city.

 

They leave it beyond the story for the girls to discover their downstairs neighbor Yuki is a teacher at their new school. Tantalizing.

 

Ryou is growing up, but Grandma is still there to celebrate those milestones.

The gourmet girls study for entrance exams and enjoy comfort food and good luck meals.

Heh.

It's almost time for the high school entrance exams and Ryou started feeling the pressure. She startles easily, even from things she sees in nightmares.

 

Ryou really misses her mom. She's always sending Japanese cuisine back in big boxes from the foreign countries where she and her husband are stationed. As for what Ryou's parents do, we're getting vague and interesting hints very similar to what Shiina's family takes care of. According to Kirin's mom, a small city would collapse without them and all Ryou says is that they're "two of the most important people in the world." Sounds way more interesting than forensic accounting.

 

Maybe Kirin should be Ryou's bodyguard!

Ryou and Kirin meet the downstairs neighbor Yuki, share a pizza and show how friendship makes food taste better.

Heh.

All this angst the girls have about going to a new school reminds me how close to the end of the season it is for this series. That's a bit sad, but a revelation at the end of this episode makes me hopeful for a sequel.

 

Kirin is a physical monster! She apologized to Yuki for using her railing to save her life. Hilarious, and scary!

 

Children, be careful playing with railings and open windows.

 

How could such a skittish, shy person ever be a teacher?

It's New Year's Eve and the Gourmet Girls spend time celebrating the best way - eating, and drinking, together!

Ryou is such a good girl. Doing all the house cleaning before Kirin even shows up. She'll make a fantastic housewife...

Aw nertz. I guess we're allowed only one bath episode this season. They had the perfect cue for another one when Ryou needed to find one more thing to clean and it was herself. Ah well, there's always the OVA's.

If Shiina starred in her own anime, it wouldn't be in the cute girls do cute things genre. She would definitely be in the Mysterious Girlfriend genre. She keeps making those sidelong glances and saying ominous things about her house over the holidays. What's going on over there, Shiina?

Ryou feels stress over her school's upcoming sports day festival. Kirin hopes the lunch she makes for her serves as comfort food.

I'm beginning to question Ryou's objectivity as a gourmet. Hee. Not really. She's always come from the school of cooking where the most important spice was Love, so seeing Kirin put so much effort into making her lunch, and then tasting a mediocre but edible meal still had Ryou experiencing foodgasms. The other girls, not so much.

Shiina invites the other gourmet girls back to her house to grill a surplus of fish. Shiina and Kirin insist on doing the cooking.

Haha! We're back to making jokes about how freakishly strong Kirin is. That's a lot of charcoal for a little lady to carry and that clay brazier looked pretty dense. No problem for Kirin, though.

 

If you have a lot of fish, you're going to attract a lot of cats. A lot of cats.

 

Don't make eye contact with the fish, especially after giving it a belly rub.

 

Ryou has her own issues. She got pretty antsy at not doing anything in the kitchen for the whole weekend.

 

I don't know how healthy that is for Shiina's mom's hands to get so pink from whatever chemical she was putting on her plants. She should wear gloves.

 

Shiina got Kirin's number, calling her freeloader for not doing any chores at Ryou's house.

Our gourmet girls try to beat the heat by eating the right food and doing other... things. Some dishes work better for Summer than others.

Heh.

Somehow the older generations survived the Tokyo Summer heat without air conditioning. These girls don't realize that you had to sit still, use a hand fan, and let a wind chime distract you from how miserable you felt. Another cute girls do cute things anime called BS on this whole Japanese tradition.
 

Obviously, you have to eat the right things to keep yourself cool. Obviously.
 

I guess that idea only works when the air conditioning is also working. Panic time!
 

Why would roasted eel with Japanese pepper cool you down? Hey, Ryou wanted to eat it, so just roll with it.

Kirin and Ryou spend a day at Shiina's house to do "summer-like" things. Flowing somen noodles is the main event.

Summer vacation for cram school students isn't all it's cracked up to be.

 

This time around, we get a Shiina centered episode and we see that Shiina is the combination of her genki girl mom and the quiet and cool maid.

 

Ha! Shiina's mom was worried that Shiina was the only having gourmetgasms and she was really happy Kirin and Ryou share her interests.

 

Mama will not be denied. Lotion for your hands! Tweezers for your splinter!

 

Leave it to Ryou to find a way to paint summer watermelons in a foodie manner.

Ryou has to spend a weekend without her friends and takes a nostalgic trip to the library instead.

Without Kirin and Shiina, could Ryou carry all the cute girls doing cute things? With a whole bunch of help from baby Ryou flashbacks, oh yes she could!

The librarian had a good moment confirming Ryou's sense of wonderment was still there.

Kirin gave Ryou up for 3 star Chinese food. Okay, she may not be cheap, but she still has a price.

Nice way to play for laughs the revelation that Shiina is weak against rain.

I liked how easily the librarian and the convenience store clerk so quickly recognized Ryou. She must have been a precious child.

I've never wanted to be a cream puff so much in my life...

Kirin and Shiina cheer Ryou up after a bad Art Class test.

Combine a bag of rice, a bad practical art class test and a conversation about how media portrayals of food don't match the real deals and you have cute girls cutely eating a whole bunch of rice dishes.

 

Shiina has officially joined Ryou's foodie harem.

 

Aw. Ryou missed having someone else serve food. She really has been lonely since her grandma died.

This was pure cute girls doing cute things slice of life anime. I loved it!
 

Ryou's downstairs neighbor Yuki makes another cameo, this time playing peek-a-boo with Kirin.

 

It appears that Ryou only had a problem with making dinner taste good because she was cooking lunch for her friends at school.

 

Kirin captured that disappointed feeling that your new best friend is still better friends with people she's known longer. You don't solve that feeling by blabbing the most embarrassing things you have found out so far to the other friend.

幸腹グラフィティ (Literally - Happy Stomach Graffiti, English title - Gourmet Girls Graffiti) Ryou's cooking doesn't taste good to herself until she realizes that cooking for others was the missing ingredient. A cute girls do cute things anime with a cooking theme.

Heh.

This anime takes the Japanese aphorism that food doesn't taste good unless its made with love way too far, in a good way! I don't know what kind of love Ryou puts into her cooking, but it's going to be a running joke on how sensually she reacts to flavorful food.

The title of the show is also a pun on the homonym 幸福 (koufuku) which means happiness.

 

Hey, all these girls (and one woman) getting on screen titles for their names wouldn't be all the people Ryou cooks for during the course of the show, would they? Of course, they would.

 

Ryou's cousin Kirin, who will be staying with her once a week, is short. I think the episode made that abundantly clear.
