I like how Ritsu was thinking of Usa trying to be a better reader, which is why she got so mad at that handsy guy.

Sayaka's old friend comes for a surprise visit. Ritsu gets a pushy friend. Usa is still too nice.

Sayaka's old junior high friend from the sticks sure knows all of her weaknesses. That her number one phobia is rabbits is a long payoff for a joke started about whether Mayumi should keep a pet. Even in trying to make sure a rabbit doesn't show up at the boarding house, she takes digs at Mayumi for not being able to attract quality guys. But the main payoff was Usa finally see Sayaka without her makeup. Scary!

Sayaka's makeup mask showed up right before the yearbook pictures for junior high. Only 14 years old, and already thinking ahead for a new manufactured life.

For weaknesses, we got BL magazines, boyfriends AND girlfriends, and being a naughty tomboy on the farm. Even after telling all those embarrassing stories, Sayaka still fixed her friend up to look beautiful for her reunion. She's a loyal friend after all.

Ritsu is now getting embarrassed for acknowledging Usa as a boy she could maybe, possibly, one day, somehow like. She does not like being reminded of this.

Usa IS a big friendly dog that follows Ritsu around. Come on Ritsu. Throw him a bone every once in a while.

Usa, however, has been aware of Ritsu as a cute girl for a very long time. It's not creepy that he gets to enjoy patting her back to get her moving through the crosswalk.

Hayashi apologizes to Usa. Chinatsu comes over to play. Ritsu gets jealous.

Mayumi signed up for a screwball comedy, and if this slice of life show about strange people turns into a teenage romantic comedy, she's going to be pissed! Fine. Bring on the screwballs!

It looks like Hayashi, just like Mori Summer, hasn't completely given up her interest in ghost stories.

Ritsu still displays an odd interest in old-fashioned arts and crafts. We go from big bubbles to shiny mud balls.

Mayumi shows bad form in making crude jokes about "playing with balls," even if the jokes go over Chinatsu's head, and Ritsu just ignores them. This is why Mayumi is mai waifu.

If it weren't for incorrect analyses and misunderstandings, and the over the top reactions to them, this show would be Tamayura. I'm not complaining, I'm just sayin'.

Does Ritsu go for the interpretation that Usa is just being nice to her because she thinks she's a screwball too, or just to ignore her jealous feelings of Usa paying attention to Hayashi? Or both? Never mind that Hayashi is just going to the café because of the Guardian Spirit Dude, which Mayumi knows. That's a weird kind of obliviousness on Ritsu's part: overanalyzing the bits she does know, while being completely ignorant of relevant circumstances. The show makes a point that Ritsu's personality trait comes from how much she likes living in the world of the book she's reading.

Outspoken children proclaiming obvious truths that adults somehow think should be kept quiet is always funny. Funnier here, because it's assumed Chinatsu has a sadistic streak, and spouts these things to make people feel uncomfortable on purpose. The way she skipped over Mayumi having a boyfriend may add some truth to that...

Jealous Ritsu is hilarious. "What would you do if Chinatsu was Usa's girlfriend?"
"Call the cops on Usa."
"What would you do if Mayumi was Usa's girlfriend?"
"Call the cops on Mayumi."

A maiden's feelings are like fluttering leaves in the wind. If you tease a girl too much about a guy she might like, instead of getting mad at you, she gets mad at the guy. Poor Usa. This is where you learn that it's a man's job to apologize for things totally out of your control.

How Mayumi got her groove back, with a little help from a centipede and a 15 year old boy.

Heh.

Shiro comes to the rescue of sad Mayumi, and his reward is getting hit in the head with a sake bottle. Don't worry, he's happy with that.

Too bad it didn't work, and Mayumi has to sing happy love songs on the roof. Looks like this kind of happy/sad concert has happened many times before.

With all the head tilting, I thought I was watching a special SHAFT production of this episode.

I find it hilarious that the centipede causing all the ruckus in the middle of the night would have been dead sooner if it didn't take Sayaka so long to put her makeup on.

The slapstick comedy over a centipede, was well done, well paced, and absolutely ludicrous. I loved it! Especially when Usa made the special point of making the centipede look like a cartoon character to stop Ritsu from panicking.

Geh.

This was a essentially a Mayumi centric episode. Part one was the red phase, full of sadness and attempted comfort. Mayumi is mai red waifu.

Usa starts his job at the Apprentice Cafe. An old friend with a new look is caught between worlds. The Kawai Manor girls enter battle mode to save Usa.

Heh.

The title of this episode is a portmanteau of the two Japanese words for happy and death. Kind of like the German Schadenfreude, this word or concept means someone is happy even though they may be dying. That seems to cover most of the situations Usa finds himself in when he deals with Ritsu. So many terrible things happen before he gets that one little smile, or look, or cute action from Ritsu.

Apparently that Mori Summer from Chuunibyou gets around...

Otaku are everywhere, even when they're geeking out over historical references.

Usa's old friend trying to impress her new friends, and all the interactions between her and her old friends was very realistic. That stress of not being found out, but being so insecure you go with the flow of the obnoxious guy, who is also insecure with trying to look cool in front of girls by insulting wait-staff, was all done very well.

That obnoxious guy character is almost an archetype in teen coming-of-age movies, so seeing him get taken down a peg by the Kawai Manor girls in full battle mode was very satisfying.

Is there a uniform for perverts? Because how could two of them be dressed exactly the same?

Sumiko marveling at how bras these days can thwart train molesters made me laugh out loud. Sayaka didn't like being the butt of Mayumi's joke, though.

An episode for Shiro serves as a progress report for the other characters. Homemade Pythagoras Switch is a thing. Little girls like pudding.

Shiro has to apologize for only liking girls 18 years and older.

The mother of the little girl Chinatsu has a finely tuned pervert detector, but it can't match the accuracy of Shiro's sadism detector.

Ritsu accidentally gives Usa a compliment by saying that he'd be a way better boyfriend for a 9 year old girl than Shiro. Obviously...

Tell me, why should we sympathize with this girl who got into a fight with her friend by saying she hates anime? So meta.

Search for Pythagoras Switch and lose minutes out of your day looking at rolling balls and moving ramps.

Mayumi seems to still be a little girl too, if she can get into a serious argument with another little girl over a boy.

I love how each of the Kawaisou characters can be boiled down into one visual feature:

Usa and Ritsu walking into a scene of chaos? We've seen that setup before.

Sumiko's reputation is well earned, as we see with how quickly she defuses a drunk and amorous Sayaka.

I agree with Sayaka that Mayumi's sweet lips may heal many wounds, but I need to remind you, she is mai waifu. That is all. Rage all you want.

Sayaka's mindgames provide much fodder for misunderstandings, but also examination of friendship rules and narrow perspectives. Shiro can sound cool, sometimes.

I realized that Sayaka could be a play on 災厄 (saiyaku), which means disaster, calamity, or accident. It's certainly true from what we've seen so far with how she wraps men around her little finger.

Usa deliberately narrowed his perspective so he would not take hints from Ritsu to leave her alone. Somehow he convinced himself it was okay to be "pushy." Oh boy, girls really don't like pushy guys, Usa-kun.

The show made it pretty clear we should watch out for this narrow perspective by showing us a frog in a well, and then by showing us one of the books Ritsu reads is titled "A Frog in a Deep Well." This is a Japanese idiom for illustrating that a frog in a deep well doesn't see much except for the small hole looking up at the sky.

Mayumi can't hide her disappointment and mean-spirited joy that her uppity friend broke up with her rich boyfriend, but this means the little party with all the rich boyfriend's friends won't be happening.

Ritsu will raise your rent if you keep teasing her. Mayumi gives her ex a short-lived second chance. Books are Ritsu's weapons of choice.

I am liking this format of mini-episodes inside the main episode. In a character driven comedy, spending a little bit more time with all of our boarders, and how they relate to our two main characters in Usa and Ritsu, makes for a relaxing visit filled with laughs.

In the first story block, we see how Ritsu's foible of not wanting attention because it leads to teasing hurts Usa's feelings through a misunderstanding. Wha? A misunderstanding exploding into a chain reaction of events in a comedy? I've never heard of such a thing! Specifically, riding on the back of Usa's new bike implies a closeness between them, which their house mates would exploit for some good-natured ribbing, and it would take her away from reading books on the way to and from school. But she didn't explain it like that, at first. "Absolutely the worst!" is much more economical in speech, but could be taken the wrong way. Ritsu grows a little when she apologizes to Usa.

Usa is so transparent. In a big scene of utter chaos, he only has eyes for Ritsu tearing up in the corner. Mayumi is annoyed that he didn't peek at her underwear. Sayaka's point is a good one, though: if you're not matching your tops and bottoms, then you're not combat ready for the battlefield of love.

Ritsu shows off another personality foible in Mayumi's story block: she only openly empathized with her love crisis because her book had a similar situation going on. But once she's finished the book, no empathy for you!

What kind of man would treat this lovely vision so poorly?

The slice of life formula means mundane happenings and settings provide opportunities to get to know our slightly off-kilter characters as they make jokes, usually at each others' expense. This show is no different, but adds loving attention to artistic detail.

If your fetish loving roommate is making a bunch of stuff with ropes and a big bucket, and then asks you to go buy some glycerin lubricant, what would you think? Yeah! He's making big bubbles! Wait, what were you thinking?

Ritsu shows off some of her personality with displaying that she doesn't want to join the bubbly fun, but so obviously wanting to join. Aww, she just needs a little push to be sociable. Ah, but when she gets some soap on her, Usa reminds us he is a normal teenage boy.

Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou - Episode 1

A high school boy meets his crush at his new boarding house. And he meets all sorts of interesting people there too. His hopes of a peaceful high school life are shattered on the first day.

Rule Number 1 for any teenage boy hoping for a "peaceful, quiet high school life," in anime at least, is don't wish for a peaceful, quiet high school life. Our main character's parents suddenly have to leave for business reasons, and they arrange for him to stay at a local boarding house. The first people he meet are rather sketchy, and he wants to leave immediately, but then he runs into the pretty girl he was ogling in the library. Change of plans, staying here is okay.

Actually, it's not okay. There are a lot of strange characters in the house, from his roommate, to the grandmotherly type manager, and even the bookish pretty girl has her own quirks. She's the granddaughter of the owner of the house, and seems to have set many of the rules in force there, specifically all the weapons in the hallway to make sure men don't come into the women's section. The title of the show, adapted from the manga, has been translated as The Kawai Complex Guide to Manors and Hostel Behavior, which seems to add in many extra words. Kawai is the girl's last name, and almost sounds like "cute" (kawaii), but isn't. Literally, the title is more like "All of us at Everyone's Kawai Manor." If you say it out loud, it's a pun for "We are all pitiful," since kawaisou (かわいそう) sounds the same as 河合荘 (Kawai Manor).

I'm sold on the show because the third character already living at the house hits all my weak points: auburn-haired, busty, red-rimmed glasses, big sister type, who drinks a lot. Yowza.

Comedies are hard to write about, because there's so much setup for the jokes, especially all the visual ones, however, the show looks amazing. If you were a fan of My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU and The Pet Girl of Sakurasou, this show will hit all your buttons.
