The Awa Awa Girls come to visit the Nagarekawa Girls. They show the more famous locodols their town is more than water and greenery. The season ends with the Nagarekawa Girls promising to repay the warm-hearted townspeople with their efforts.

Hey, those weren't little kids playing in the river! Yui and Mirai are short, we get it...

Nanako's Mom appears to believe in the red string of fate too in letting Yukari come and wake up her daughter. Fu fu fu.

Not going to lie: I laughed real hard when Nanako was about to drop her phone and Yui caught it. Short folks and river banks for the win!

Those disguises aren't fooling anyone, Awa Awa Girls. Too bad the Nagarekawa people, well, the kids and old people, only have eyes for their own local idols.

Nanako: we've got water... and greenery... and... food!

It's a rare day when the Nagarekawa Girls don't have some kind of gig, but it's because all their costumes and Uogokoro-kun are being washed and serviced. Yui thinks it's time for Uogokoro-kun Mark 3.

The Nagarekawa Girls perform last at the Locodol Festival. They don't win, but leave early enough to make their city's own festival.

We got a great concert performance out of this episode. The performance also served as our flashback montage as we saw all the scenes that inspired the lyrics.

For a local idol unit only funded by the city government, they were pretty professional with including animated versions of themselves on the huge venue displays.

The Nagarekawa Girls attend Locodol Festival and meet other groups. The popular Awa Awa Girls realize they're only selling themselves instead of promoting their town.

Nanako sure is fixated on the dangerous and menial jobs they've had to do for the local cable commercials. The first thing she wants to ask the the Awa Awa Girls is what was their most dangerous job.

Apparently, Nagarekawa's specialties are the things Nanako's uncle kept stocking her family's fridge with: orange jellies and sweet rice wine cider. At least they have some kind of meat-filled croquette, which is a bit too hot to eat on a hot day.

The Eye Catch wants you to eat croquettes and orange jellies, while drowning in rice wine cider...

The Nagarekawa Girls are invited to Locodol Festival. Nanako struggles with writing a new song. After sharing her feelings, the girls prepare their song for its first live performance.

Nanako feels so normal. She struggles for days to write some lyrics to convey her feelings about how she loves Nagarekawa, but then the other girls do all the editing, music writing, and choreography in one day each.

Yukari is sooo happy to go on a "deito" with her precious Nana-chan.

Yes, it's true. Nanako's friends have realized she's a masochist. How else to explain that Nanako thinks the most memorable parts of being a local idol are exterminating wasps, cleaning skyscraper windows, and mixing dangerous chemicals?

Ah, the glamorous life of a locodol.

Nanako wants to know why they were chosen as locodols. Yukari gets a fever at an event. She remembers first meeting Nanako and why it was fate they became the Nagarekawa Girls.

Oh, Nanako. Never ask for the full reason why you got any job. The harsh truth may be harsher than you're prepared for. Like being the safe choice includes not being very feminine...

I thought I was watching Rail Wars! for a couple of seconds there. Especially when Uogokoro-kun said that he wanted to protect everyone's smiles and safety.

It takes a strong fever to knock Yukari down. Thankfully Uogokoro-kun is a ゆるキャラ (yurukyara), so he's nice and soft in the head. Yui didn't escape unscathed, however.

Nanako tries to get friendly with Mirai. Mirai tries to fit in with the Nagarekawa Girls. Uogokoro-kun jiggles, fwooshes, and slouches with Mirai.

One of Nanako's friends thinks they're already trying to replace her in the Nagarekawa Girls locodol unit. No, she's teasing, I think. She belatedly realized that short Mirai could fit inside the Uogokoro-kun costume.

Friends and family watch the Nagarekawa Girls and Uogokoro-kun at the Civic Mascot Sports Day. The locodols get a new member. Visitors are already coming to Nagarekawa.

This is a comedy show, so you know that watching the girls' national television appearance isn't going to be easy. Nanako spends too much time replying to texts to watch her Nanyako moment. Yui's family trips a circuit breaker from having too many appliances on. And Yukari has to attend to guests for a family affair and fell asleep trying to watch her recording.

The girls represent Nagarekawa at the Civic Mascot Sports Day. Yukari and Nanako successfully wing their national spot, while Yui takes home the Spirit Award as Uogokoro-kun.

All those funny, embarrassing obstacle course events you've ever seen from Japan were nothing compared to putting the contestants in big, soft mascot costumes first.

Nanyako goes National!

Aw. Yui makes it to the semifinals, and even beats the eventual winner in the sumo match, but she knocked herself out doing a front flip. She should have done her usual back-flips and she would have been okay.

Beating somebody because they have a bad hip? That will get you the reputation of having the terrifying power of bad luck.

The Nagarekawa Girls dream of a National Debut. Saori makes it happen at a mascot contest. The girls pray at a local shrine to a god with a colorful history.

Eh?!

The actual mascot is the big minnow on Uogokoro-kun's back? The big blue thing is just a water spirit that worships it? And the minnow's name is Mulder? Named after the Dutch architect of the canal system running through Nagarekawa? The things you find out if you just ask Yui some questions.

That little god the girls pray to has a remarkable history too. Born in America, Billiken became a god of fortune in Osaka. And Nanako was hilarious trying to speak to him in a Kansai dialect and then in English.

Heh.

Set a goal of a national debut. Wait ten seconds. Saori makes it happen. High fives!

The Nagarekawa Girls get a manager. They discover an unofficial fan site. They perform a guerilla concert on a department store roof for new fans.

Heh.

Amid worries of stalkers, news of a new manager, and the discovery of a fan site with candid pictures, the locodols are introduced to Saori, who happens to be doing all three things at once.

Yui and Yukari want Nanako to take her job more seriously. She doesn't seem like an idol. She is an idol.

How could Nanako not recognize herself in those pictures? There's modesty, and then there's obliviousness.

Saori really wanted that job as the locodol manager. At least the girls think she's way better than Nanako's uncle.

Even the little kids are beginning to recognize the Nagarekawa Girls, but their memories are a bit selective. They know them as girls who sang at the pool, and one of them took off their clothes in a parking lot. That's not wrong...

Suit up.

The third member of the Locodol group enters the stage: Nagarekawa mascot Uogokoro-kun. He flips. It rains, but the show must go on.

Uogokoro is a compound word combining fish (魚, uo) and heart or spirit (心, kokoro). Uogokoro-kun represents the Spirit of Fish.

If the mascot becomes popular, the local government can totally make up for the PR costs in merchandising and licensing the image. Do your best, Uogokoro-kun!

I did not expect that floppy costume to handle flipping so well.

Yukari and Nanako make cable TV commercials. They become semi-famous. They don't get paid for TV time, but they do get a Thank You letter and lots of sweets.

Yukari warns Nanako that because they only get one take to do the commercials, the production crew will use that as an excuse to keep the "accidental" panty shots. Cable TV is scary!

Aw. Yukari may be pretty, rich, and smart, but she doesn't have any friends except for her cousin.

I think leaving a yuri magazine out counts as trying too hard to accommodate a new friend's unknown tastes.

Nanako's need to do something right makes her freeze up and take her imagined consequences to the absurd.

Full title "Futsū no Joshikōsei ga Locodol Yattemita," (Normal High School Girls Tried Being Local Idols) is a gag comedy about exactly that. Follow Nanako and Yukari as they promote civic events around their city.

The Japanese take their local civics seriously. I never learned my hometown's anthem. I don't even know if we have an official song... These kids know the Nagarekawa song by heart already!
