Part flashback episode, part new beginnings, we see a world without Rurumo for a short while. The gang then welcomes in the new year.

Kouta's friends are so shy in asking if it's okay if his "little sister" Rurumo can come with them to the new year's festival.

Nice guy Shibaki works hard for the money. To rent Rurumo a beautiful kimono, of course.

People forgot about Rurumo, but the physical evidence of her presence was not. That's not a very good magic spell.

With Rurumo forgotten, Mama Shibaki thinks there is only one reason Kouta made and borrowed money.

The Occult Club forms a Girl Band to recruit new members on a musical TV show. Rurumo becomes the lead singer, but her shyness stops her from singing in front of a large crowd.

Heh.

Sure. Make it Tanako's fault we got a convoluted plot that somehow delivered Kouta in his dream role as lead singer of an all-girl band.

Kudos all the way around for bring all the little elements of the side character development into the story. From showing that Rurumo is no longer shy in front of this large group of people, which shows they are now her friends, to everyone accepting Masako's costume making skills, to even showing the other disciplinary committee girls as just regular cute girls.

Kouta never did get his bunny girl band.

On a class trip to a famous hot springs region, the Occult Club finds a magical spring. Kouta becomes a wolf after drinking the water, but Rurumo changes him back.

Heh.

More episodic comedy, this time Kouta going crazy over a mixed hot springs bath.

Of course, the Occult Club can't go anywhere without finding some mysterious place in the woods that will cause all sorts of trouble. Instead of a magical swimsuit that turns Rurumo into a bold maiden in love, we got Kouta turning into a wolf. He gets better.

Chiro went a little crazy in the mixed bath too. Maybe having a chance to get naked in human form gets her all full of excited energy.

Rurumo cosplays with Masako. Rurumo needs to buy a bra, and all the girls help. Size doesn't matter; that one's breasts are treasured is what's important.

Oh, you just had to play the "who are you?" card with Masako in full Soune Miko dress?

I liked how Kouta broke the fourth wall when the anime logo came onto the screen.

I thought only creepy male otaku bought these things.

Rurumo's "friend" Harulily comes to visit. She sees how hard Rurumo is working and that she has grown a little as a person too.

Heh.

This wasn't a typically outrageous episode, mainly because we were following clumsy Rurumo instead of Ero King Kouta. More like taking stock, to see how far Rurumo has come from the perspective of someone who knew in the Underworld.

Harulily's familiar wasn't very expressive. Did she pick this quiet cat because it reminded her of the expressionless Rurumo?

Frenemy was what we were supposed to think of Harulily when we first met her, but she's more like an exasperated friend trying to provoke a reaction out of the clumsy quiet Rurumo and got into a rut playing pranks and forgetting why she was trying to provoke Rurumo in the first place. She remembered when she saw Rurumo blush a little as she responded to Kouta and that brought out a bit of jealousy as well.

Hmm.

Harulily was a good friend after all, who cares for Rurumo. She's also surprised that Rurumo doesn't know that granting Kouta's wishes shortens his life, and with Kouta knowing this caveat for the magic tickets, she may be training for many years. That fits Rurumo's pattern since she's always been the slow one, and she's already spent several years in prison too.

When Rurumo told Harulily that she finally had an idea about the first thing she would do when she became a witch again, and that it was to thank Kouta for his help in finishing her training, I got that almost-everything-but-not-quite feeling that Japanese story telling likes to invoke. Perhaps Rurumo's story is a special case where she can become a witch and Kouta gets to see that happen. Harulily knows, just like Chiro does, that Rurumo would rather get stuck in a holding pattern instead of killing someone to achieve her goal, so all she can do is root for her to find a way to happiness. Bittersweet, tinged with regret, is where the story would normally go, but with Kouta involved, and all the strange things that happen around him, Rurumo may just find that bizarre path to the impossible.

The beach episode offers fan service and laughs. The legendary swimsuit makes Rurumo bold enough to make a move on Kouta. Kouta loves motor boating.

Heh.

Of course. The Legendary Swimsuit that emboldens young maidens has to be a school swimsuit.

This episode seemed to be about nothing, but it confirmed Rurumo's feelings for Kouta, as she shoved the club president out of the way and chased after Kouta like the Terminator.

Kouta takes in some abandoned kittens. The sickly one, Jiken, dies before he can find a new home. Jiken, Rest In Peace.

Geh.

From the moment that box of kittens opened, we knew the little white one was going to be special. He had such bright, sensitive eyes. And that he twice recovered Kouta's book of magic tickets, perhaps giving his life for it, showed he knew it was something important. "Don't lose these," his eyes seemed to say to Kouta. Jiken, you were loved and knew happiness in your short life. You were a good kitty.

Rurumo needs to deliver something to Kouta, but her clumsiness leads to many misadventures and chance meetings along the way. Chiro thinks Rurumo may be growing fond of Kouta.

Meh.

A whole episode devoted to Rurumo being clumsy, forgetful, and dumb? I understand we're supposed to develop feelings of wanting to protect her, but that's a Japanese cultural conceit. I'm not feeling it, and it makes her look pathetic. As a plot driver, a pathetic clumsy girl is good for a side character, but not a main character.

Heh.

Having Rurumo walk around the whole city because she's lost was a good enough excuse to see some of the other characters. Sawashita in breezy summer dress was a slice of alright. And seeing one of the Discipline Committee members revealing her cosplay hobby will be good for laughs later on.

 

We know from Kouta that "cosplay" is a powerful magic word.

The Discipline Committee targets the Ero King's porn stash. Chiro invades the school as a cute girl. Mama knows what to do with dirty magazines.

Kouta may be a nice guy, but his reputation as the Ero King is still well deserved. It's not just his position as Keeper of the Stash, but his well-honed Panstu Vision.

Rurumo starts working in the school cafeteria, clumsily. The Occult Club president takes an interest in Rurumo. A new girl takes an interest in Kouta?

Heh.

We had comedy in the classic sense. Misunderstandings and narrative misdirection lead to a comedic twist. Why exactly Tanako likes the President is a mystery, but playing off Kouta's misperception that she was interested in him was great fun. Adding a spark of jealousy because the President is interested in Rurumo's deep knowledge of magic, and we get desperate situations with desperate comedy.

Floating orange in water for the win.

Kitty dumping a basket for the win.

Aw. Rurumo's sense of independence makes her want to pay Kouta back for the nice dress.

When Kouta finds out Rurumo has been camping out in the woods, he secretly moves her into his room. Scary Mama finds out, but magic fixes everything.

Heh.

Ususally a kuudere girl is smart and competent, but Rurumo is clumsy and kind of slow. Good thing Chiro the cat is around to protect her from scary frogs.

The guys from the Occult Research Club may be interested in Mystery Girls, but they're still guys who want to see a cute girl in her underwear, even if they explain it away as documenting a ritual. Sure, we believe you. Just like trying to capture a ghost in the girl's locker room with a camera. Naughty ghost...

Kouta has amazing sneaking skills. With a mother who suspects he may be the neighborhood pervert, he had good reason to perfect that crouching shuffle.

Yup. Mama is scary.

Rurumo, a shy, clumsy witch in training, must convince Kouta to use up all his magic tickets in granting his wishes to graduate. Unbeknownst to her, using each ticket shortens Kouta's life. This magical gag comedy focuses on school life, fan service, and a bit of romance.

Heh.

This little cat black cat Chiro is going to steal the show.

Kouta flipped girls' skirts a little longer than the other guys in his class, and got the reputation of being the Ero King. I like that even though he hates that reputation because it prevents him from getting any female friends, he can't quite give up on it either because it feels nice to be recognized.

Rurumo is a really slow learner, and she doesn't think fast on her feet either. Dude wishes for panties, and she just gives him her own, even though it's against the Witch's Code to give mortals any of her belongings. She's going to need a lot of training...

Just how did Kouta get roped into the Occult Research Club anyway? Because his friends joined? They're all normal guys wanting to meet girls, so I'm confused on how they thought this club would help in that way.

Kouta can't escape his Ero King reputation because almost all his buddies from middle school followed him to high school. Even worse, the disciplinary committee leader has known him since grade school.

Why would a talking cat have a Kansai accent?

Okay, Kouta has to admit that being trusted with all the other boys' stash of porno mags has affected his attention span.
