Most of Souma's classmates go home for the Summer break while he works on his curry recipe at school. The students vie for only 8 spots in the first round of the Autumn Elections.
Episode 20 - "The Dragon Lies Down and Ascends the Skies"
Heh.
In terms of the plot, this was a transitional episode, pretty much laying the groundwork for the drama and tension the characters will see during the Autumn Elections. You know what that means? Gags! Exposition that doubles as foreshadowing! Sexy fanservice! So, really, a Shokugeki episode before all the foodgasms break out.
Slim Type Isami! We've seen this kind of thing before with Tamako in Silver Spoon. Some Japanese just can't deal with that Summer heat.
According to the screen pans, there are 7 real contenders in A Block and 8 in B Block.
Megumi had to freak out about how well qualified Akira was to win the curry based competition.
Then she had to freak out about how there are just too many combinations of curry spices and how they're prepared to even start thinking about a dish.
She wasn't the only one freaking out, though.
Because Erina is one of the Elite 10, she had nothing to do with the next foodie adventure. Which meant she was bored. Which meant she started fussing over Hisako. Hisako has no time for "trump" (playing cards) like at the training camp.
The kids didn't see each other for about three weeks because of the break. This was entirely too long for poor Ikumi and her crush on Souma. Her heart wasn't ready...
Two of the girls, creepy stalker Nao and China Dress Miyoko, introduced themselves last episode, but judging from how much attention was paid to each, Miyoko is going to factor more during the competition.
The Queens of Curry are the two main judges, the Sendawara twins. How to tell them apart? Their beauty marks are under opposite eyes and the one with bangs talks in such a seductive manner, older gentlemen can't help but blush. I like her a lot...
Erina and Urara the idol aren't the only ones with fan clubs.
Miyoko-sama apparently puts on a show with all that shaking she does when stirring her wok. Looks like the guys in the audience also got their woks stirred up!
With all this buildup and seeing the new and old characters apply their specialties to their food prep, the only one we didn't see was Souma, until the epilogue. What was he doing? Nodding off! Ha! All those all-nighters took their toll and we can't even tell what he's cooking because it's in just one pot on a burner.
Souma's cliffhangers are usually atypical. The story lets the other characters do all the worrying while he's either sleeping or frozen in shock. We'll have to wait 'til next time to see how he improved on the set of spices that impressed Isshiki. That is, if he wakes up in time.
