Megumi gains confidence from the first day of training camp, but Chef Shinomiya expels her, angering Souma.
Heh.
Did we really need that flash-forward halfway through the episode showing Megumi getting expelled? What the hell was that about?
Yeah, I can see how Isshiki and Doujima could get along with all that masculine nakedness going on.
Souma figured it out, with a little help from Doujima, that Erina was even faster than he was at preparing all those meals.
I love well-developed characters! Even just the little accident of bumping into each other in the hallway gave us many good gags and jokes between Souma, Erina and Hisako.
Erina quickly regained her footing and Souma had the proper bored response.
He even invited her to play cards with him before lights out! No way such a refined young lady would enjoy frivolous time wasting pursuits...
And just when you thought the jokes had run out, enter Hisako.
That's right. Souma pushed Erina down on the floor, with all that implies.
This is a bit of a pun, because the character 床 (ショウ, shou) means bed and floor, so Hisako could hear Souma say he put Erina on the floor or took her to bed.
The common cliché for misunderstanding in anime is translated as "pushed her down." Yeah, Souma, don't say things that could be misunderstood!
From what we saw of Erina in the 2nd episode, she can't be honest with someone she dislikes, to the point of ridiculousness. That trait of hers made her fail Souma's transfer exam and now she can't even admit she wanted to play cards too just because Souma thought of the same thing. Very tsun tsun.
Hisako must be pretty talented too if she had time to run down to the front desk to pick up a pack of cards before Souma took his bath.
Speaking of baths.
Did Megumi ask if Ryouko got bigger again because of rice malt? I've never heard of such a thing!
That is one lucky rubber duck.
Trying out the bed, she said, Yuki (hair-down version).
We've seen how handy Souma is with his knives, so it's not a surprise to see him juggling like this.
Erina didn't like being seen as vulnerable by Souma. No wonder she was so flustered.
I think she hated being seen as a fun-loving girl "prancing down the hallway humming" even more.
Hmm.
We got a little break from the tension of the story, but we dived right back in with the harsh Chef Shinomiya. Last episode, we saw him have some kind of writer's block in making a new recipe and this episode, we saw him be very strict with the given recipe, not even allowing any creativity to compensate for bad ingredients he intentionally provided. His test reminded me of the Star Fleet Academy test in Star Trek, the fabled Kobayashi Maru, where there is no success, but Shinomiya's standard for success is getting to the ingredients quickly, as well as preparing the dish properly. It's a fair way of weeding out the students without a good eye for quality produce, but if you can still make a dish within the time limit that "fixes" those bad ingredients, then the failure comes from not accepting defeat.
It looks like Doujima has seen this before and doesn't approve. Leave it to the brash Souma to call the head chef a failure for providing bad ingredients and then challenging Shinomiya to the next Shokugeki. I liked how angry Souma was, but as soon as he decided on his course of action, all the emotion left his voice. He knew what he had to do, so he just started doing it. If Souma weren't the good guy main character, he could easily be a super villain in some other kind of show. It's not too often we see scary good guys in anime these days.
