Most students accept the results of the auditions, but there are some hard feelings. Taki-sensei offers a way to move forward.

Hmm.

This episode focused mainly on how an older student treats a younger student who has won a position through competition. We saw in Kumiko's flashback that she had faced a senior student who was upset and angry that Kumiko was better than she was. That's the explicit message an audition imparts, that someone is better than everyone else. In the present circumstances, Kumiko was worried that Natsuki was going to make a scene like the junior high girl did.

While Kumiko's past was concentrated into one person, those feelings appeared to be separated out into two people for Reina's audition drama. The one who couldn't accept the loss was Kaori's number one fan Yuuko. Interestingly enough, besides all the tension spread by rumors of nepotism because Reina and Taki-sensei's fathers are friends, was that Kaori herself didn't accept the decision. Taki-sensei's solution to bringing back harmony to the band is for everyone to hear who really is the best trumpet soloist. I'm sure Kaori will know as soon as she hears for herself how Reina played at her audition.

The girls deal with some awkwardness after the festival while also experiencing nerves, disappointment and triumph during the auditions.

Heh.

This was a pretty straightforward episode. There's some fallout from the Agata Festival that needed to be addressed and added into some character development. Then there were the auditions themselves, which revealed all the tensions that had been building.

 

The biggest revelation was Matsumoto-sensei's awesome legs. No wonder she keeps telling the girls to unroll their skirts. Wait, I mean, the biggest revelation was Asuka's temper.

At the Agata Festival, love is lost and found among the band members.

Hmm.

Let's talk about the symbols of love that featured prominently this episode. First of all is the Agata Festival itself. Taking place on June 5th, the main ritual is carrying a male deity's statue to its temporary setting by naked men. We weren't shown this in the episode, thankfully. At the same time, the protector goddess of the shrine is carried to the same place. Culturally, this double procession has taken on the meaning of a divine marriage, which is why it's a big deal for couples to attend the festival before the rituals.

 

The second big symbol of love was the two star formation shown during Reina's and Kumiko's excursion. In the summer sky, we in the West know these stars as Vega and Altair. The Japanese know them as Orihime and Hikoboshi, two lovers who made the other gods so jealous of their love for each other, they were separated, only to briefly visit each other one night a year. This is celebrated at the Tanabata Festival which is held at various times in late Summer when the two stars are brightest in the sky.

 

Incidentally, there is a formation in the West called the Summer Triangle, when the bright star Deneb can rise high enough above the horizon to form a triangle with Vega and Altair. Sounds a little like Hazuki barging in between Shuuichi and Kumiko. Of course, this Festival Triangle was more like a polygon because two triangles were combined with Shuuichi being third wheel to Kumiko and Reina, and Hazuki being third wheel to Shuuichi and Kumiko.

 

It was fun to recognize the two stars about Reina's head and to notice the god and goddess above the traffic light too. If you're Japanese, then you knew what the story was trying to get across with following the two couples at the festival.

Aoi quits the band and Natsuki tells the freshmen of the band's drama the previous year.

Heh.

It was a rainy week, the colors were dreary to match the serious events, but let's talk about the most important thing here - Hazuki is aiming for Shuuchi and she will run right through Kumiko if she has to!

 

Okay, okay, that wasn't the most important thing. It was actually Reina sitting right next to Kumiko and Shuuichi on the train and not saying anything! I mean, how rude!

 

Okay, fine. That wasn't the most important thing either. The most important thing was that Kaori-senpai will never notice Yuuko over Haruka! Suck it up, Yuuko!

 

Okay, for reals this time. The most important thing this episode is that Natsuki could be this cute.

10 Second Anime - Hibike! Euphonium - Episode 6



Taki-sensei requires band members to audition for their spots. The bass section seeks to motivate Hazuki's tuba playing.

Heh.

Taki-sensei's nickname of the good-looking demon (and mean too) seems well deserved to the band members not used to hard work and lots of practice. Now that he required the players to audition for the final spots in the competition ensemble, that nickname is going to stick.

 

With open auditions that means the tradition of having the seniors automatically chosen was set aside and there's going to be some tension as the talented juniors might displace them. I can see their "fans" throwing fits too.

 

Natsuki, the seemingly disinterested junior, perked right up when she heard the chosen music and got motivated by Kumiko's sight reading. How many spots are there for euphoniums again?

 

The point of freshmen and juniors competing with seniors for seats is that Hazuki the new tuba player has a shot. Unfortunately for her, she's not quite motivated at playing the bass notes since the music sounds pretty boring. This sounds like a job for Asuka.

The marching band members practice, what else, marching before they make their favorable first impression at the Sunrise Festival.

Heh.

For a marching band, they weren't doing much marching before now.

 

Natsuki, the supposedly lazy sophomore, said that they started practicing marching and formations way earlier this year than last year. Taki-sensei is definitely doing things differently.

 

Asuka was their drum majorette! This explains everything about her oversized personality. She didn't want to be president, though. The more serious Haruka fit that role better.

 

Taki-sensei still made his time valuable. Barely showing up on time just to say he was looking forward to the band's performance, he didn't come close to inspiring like the harsh words of the other teacher. But when they were just about to go on, after Reina used her trumpet to break a sudden rush of despair, he gave them a blast of his confidence in them and told them to make everyone else learn about the new Kitauji High School Marching Band. Not any waste in his time or timing.

 

It looked like a good beginning, but we don't know if it ended well. I hope so.

 

With all the preparations for the festival ongoing, there was still room for the funny stuff, character development and some revelations too. Kumiko did the heavy lifting for the comedy.

10 Second Anime - Hibike! Euphonium - Episode 4



Mr. Taki personally trains each of the sections for their next ensemble play. Some still don't like his attitude, but questions about his commitment fade away.

Heh.

If this is how Mr. Taki handles a band with aspirations to compete in the Nationals, would the kids have interpreted his laidback demeanor differently if they were a club who just wanted to make happy memories? Even when he was talking to the flute player about her lack of skill as a senior, there was no malice, but the words themselves, making the point about wasting one's youth, would have sounded harsh if they were read from a piece of paper. Plus the girl's crying...

 

I don't think Mr. Taki would have changed at all. He just would have asked the kids to do different things. After a week of his training, he sounded convinced this band had a shot of going to the Nationals. Maybe he always believed it, which is the reason he asked them last week why they were wasting his time.

 

Wasting time appears to be a thing for Mr. Taki. After he distributed the very packed practice schedule for their next public performance, he said, "If you gather the time you waste being young, this much practice shouldn't be difficult." I wonder how young this guy is.

 

Using all the practice time was a good way of meeting all the musicians, even if we'll never learn all their names. I'm going to start calling the trumpet player with the yellow ribbon "Dekomori."

The new band members choose their instruments. The band club's first ensemble piece exposes painful history from last year.

New kids have to learn how to play instruments, and using Hazuki learning how to sustain a note was great attention to detail.

 

There appeared to be a link between the girls hiking up their skirts and the lazy bullying attitude that infected the band.

 

Mr. Taki sized up this group pretty well. He gave them the task of learning a very simple ensemble piece and they couldn't even do that. Haruka doesn't have the backbone to lay down the law and Asuka is too spacy to lead.

 

Speaking of spacy, Asuka gave the audience even more material to appreciate her energy.

Kumiko and her new friends officially join the band club and choose their instruments. Kumiko tries to talk to her former classmate Reina.

Heh.

Kumiko wants to talk to Reina, but not to apologize. No wonder she keeps putting this off. Maybe it would be better just to ask Reina why she thought their school had a chance to play in the next round when Kumiko was pessimistic. Actually, it was more like she just didn't care all that much.

 

Maybe Kumiko doesn't care all that much because she's just been playing the euphonium out of habit and not by personal choice since elementary school?

 

Why trombone? And why is she annoyed at seeing her neighbor Shuuichi? I get the feeling Kumiko is trying to affect an aloof attitude, but she just seems not to have found something to care about yet. Perhaps she just hasn't admitted to herself she really likes playing the euphonium even when it wasn't an inspired choice and her big sister plays it too. She can be unique without having to play a different instrument.

I like how this show uses the blue frame to denote a flashback or fantasy sequence.

 

The three new friends' relationships solidified nicely.

10 Second Anime - Hibike! Euphonium - Episode 1



Translated - Sound! Euphonium. Kumiko starts high school ambivalent about continuing her interest in playing for a concert band, but her new classmates drag her reluctantly into joining their school's mediocre club. Kumiko's new friends and old schoolmates create a story about relationships, new beginnings, and most of all, music.

KyoAni is back showing cute girls make cute music, but this time in a much more structured way. We don't have afterschool tea time in Hibike! Euhphonium, but we still have quirky girls starting high school.

 

Here's a nice reference for the new foursome we'll be following.

The focus is on Kumiko, a talented Euphonium player who came from the same junior high as trumpet player Reina. They have some kind of history together. Sapphire, who prefers to go by Midori because she's embarrassed by her name, plays bass. Hazuki is the genki girl with no intimacy boundaries who wants to learn to play a horned instrument.
