10 Second Anime - Soul Eater Not! - Episode 12 [END]

Soul Eater Not! - Episode 12 [END]

 photo 10SecondAnime-SoulEaterNot-Episode12END_zpsbe299ed5.gif

Tsugumi makes her choice for Meister: both of them! The soul resonance between the three girls works as they defeat the witch. They all grow a little by season's end.

Heh.

So that's how soul resonance works with one weapon and two meisters. Referencing the two different fighting styles, Tsugumi changes her halberd's shape. Long pointy tip for Anya, big axe for Meme, and super-sized for both of them together.

You know things are serious when Anya chooses to wear a short skirt on her own!

Soul Eater Not! - Episode 11

10 Second Anime - Soul Eater Not! - Episode 11 photo 10SecondAnime-SoulEaterNot-Episode11_zpsd08cbe9a.gif

The Halloween Festival begins, but so does Shaura's plot using hypnotized students. Anya and Tsugumi reunite to save Meme. Tsugumi learns to fly, fua-fua style.

Heh.

Shaura's fit has hit the shan, and plans on overwhelming the EAT students by sheer numbers of hypnotized NOT students.

Tsugumi was really desperate if she got on a moped driven by the Thompson sisters.

Anya may have A-Class Pouty Face, but it doesn't work on Clay's S-Class version.

If Pouty Face doesn't work, Anya has a special attack guaranteed to work on Akane: OMG What's a Witch Doing Over There!??

10 Second Anime - Soul Eater Not! - Episode 10

Soul Eater Not! - Episode 10

10 Second Anime - Soul Eater Not! - Episode 10 photo 10SecondAnime-SoulEaterNot-Episode10_zps484e4f3a.gif

The cute girls make cute Jack o' Lanterns, sorta. Meme gets caught sleep-burgling. Shaura begins her reign of chaos, claiming Mr. Sid and Meme as her first victims.

Hmm.

We have a few moments of fua-fua time before the trifecta of loss hits Tsugumi. Her dog might die, Meme gets captured and then co-opted by Shaura, and Anya's cover gets blown as a princess and has to be separated to protect her from the chaos and violence starting to consume the town. All her best friends have been taken from her, for now, and even her indecisiveness about choosing a partner stings her because Anya does not have an official reason to bring her with her under overt protection by Clay and Akane.

It could be argued that Soul Eater Not! is just the origin story for Mr. Sid becoming an indestructible zombie. I said, could.

One big mystery surrounding Meme is that Shaura's hypnosis is not the only spell she's under. The experts have found a stronger hypnosis underneath the one Shaura put her under. That will probably be the key to fighting back against Shaura and her hypnotized minions.

We'll probably have about an episode and a half before we get back to fua-fua time. I hope it feels quicker than that.

Heh.

Tsugumi's cute Jack o' Lantern versions of Meme, her, and Anya are cute, and capture themselves perfectly

Anya makes an acceptably scary pumpkin. I don't think a red ribbon can make a dent in its ugliness, though.

Kana agrees. Hopeless cause.

10 Second Anime - Soul Eater Not! - Episode 9

Soul Eater Not! - Episode 9

10 Second Anime - Soul Eater Not! - Episode 9 photo 10SecondAnime-SoulEaterNot-Episode9_zps7b774dd9.gif

While their pumpkins grow for the Halloween Festival, the cute girls do cute things. Like beating the heat, retracing Meme's day, and playing baseball.

Heh.

While we're waiting for the Halloween Festival, this cute girls do cute things story offers several vignettes, mainly related to Meme.

Meme's sleep boxing is similar to drunken boxing, but make no mistake, it is based on sleeping. From rolling around to feigning a leg cramp to block a kick, this is all about the deep sleep.

What's up with Tsugumi's sleepwear? "Sleeping Bust" on a T-Shirt? Is she hoping for a growth spurt while she sleeps?

Bringing the bats back at the end of the episode to be used as carrier bats to send a letter home for Meme was a fun callback.

Meme's Hangover bit where she retraced her steps hit all the right spots. To even shave one eyebrow off to lose a little bit of weight just shows the fugue state she normally walks around in.

One neat thing the episode did to show the progression of time was the girls growing pumpkins to make Jack o' Lanterns for Halloween.

Soul Eater Not! - Episode 8

10 Second Anime - Soul Eater Not! - Episode 8 photo 10SecondAnime-SoulEaterNot-Episode8_zps7883e474.gif

Dr. Stein successfully treats Eternal Feather's wound. Kim and Jackie break up. The meisters give Tsugumi a deadline to choose a partner.

Heh.

Epic trolling by Dr. Stein! Screw through the head, twice! Robotic head creepily crawling all over the place! And wind-up key in the back when Eternal Feather checks out! Epic!

Obviously, he patched her up really quickly to put together all those pranks, and had time to find the puncture wound left by the ring Shaura Gorgon gave her.

All that trolling produced not one, but two Gargantous's!

Soul Eater Not! - Episode 7

10 Second Anime - Soul Eater Not! - Episode 7 photo 10SecondAnime-SoulEaterNot-Episode7_zps3a880e5e.gif

The cute girls do more cute things, at the school, at the cafƩ, and at the special market, before things get serious. Shaura Gorgon the witch attacks Eternal Feather.

Heh.

The only way Clay knows how to protect his cover is to make a confession of love, no matter how awkward or improbable it would be. I'm sure there are certain fans of Japanese pop culture who would love a Clay and Mr. Sid pairing...

At the Deathbucks Caffe, the Master is still the scariest one there, no matter how tough the Thompson sisters try to act. I think they're getting better at their jobs. Maybe a little bit...

Soul Eater Not! - Episode 6

10 Second Anime - Soul Eater Not! - Episode 6 photo 10SecondAnime-SoulEaterNot-Episode6_zps15d8567c.gif

The Thompson sisters had it rough. Tsugumi is hard-headed. Kid tidies things up. Gargantous!

Heh.

What a neat way to introduce the Thompson sisters Liz and Patty by showing Liz remembering their rough childhood as she tried to protect Patty on the mean streets of Brooklyn as she dozed off in the Death City subway.

What an even neater way to introduce the Thompson sisters as delinquents than to have Anya and Meme mimicking gangsta talk they picked up from a ridiculous CSI spin-off.

10 Second Anime - Soul Eater Not! - Episode 5

Soul Eater Not! - Episode 5

10 Second Anime - Soul Eater Not! - Episode 5 photo 10SecondAnime-SoulEaterNot-Episode5_zps5d83e318.gif

Cute girls do cute things in their room, in the pool, in the kitchen, in the bath, and at the ice cream shop. The Big Bad Witch shows her scary face.

Heh.

Japanese folklore shows raccoon dogs to be mischievous, but did they really have to reinforce it with Kim by showing her coin purse to be a raccoon dog too? This reminds me of Naruto's coin purse being shown to have a toad theme before we were even made aware that he would make a contract to summon toads. Planning way ahead.

Way to spoil everything, dorm mother! Her big poster of relationships, even if it is for her crazy way of inserting everyone into her story of the Commoner of Flanders, seems pretty dead-accurate. I guess she was just waiting for a commoner like Tsugumi to show up and be her star...

Lots of busty girls wearing red glasses this season... Where was Eternal Feather hiding those in her nun outfit?

Anya has to release the rage! Take that, little wooden doll!

Nothing sketchy about being born on April 31st. Nope. No sir.

The yuri is strong with Jacqueline. And it's contagious, as we see Kim getting all dere dere.

10 Second Anime - Soul Eater Not! - Episode 4

Soul Eater Not! - Episode 4

10 Second Anime - Soul Eater Not! - Episode 4 photo 10SecondAnime-SoulEaterNot-Episode4_zps1ab36562.gif

Tsugumi tries to figure out her goals at Death Weapon Meister Academy. Bloomers, 1; Anya, 0. Clay could write for soap operas.

Heh.

Gargantos watch: nope. I was looking for it too.

Tsugumi's so bold! Kyaa! Asking Akane out to a cafƩ just like that.

I like the little touches this fua-fua cute girls doing cute things show does. First, we have Tsugumi making sure that Akane has the cheesecake instead of her. Then we have her shuffling her chair next to Clay to ask him a question.

Clay may be able to add a lot of details when he's surprised, but the original thought of trying to place Akane's "interest" on someone else to keep the cover on their mission was where he went wrong. It seems clear now that Clay and Akane's mission is to protect Anya, and probably because she just ran away from home, but the royal family is keeping tabs on her just the same.

Meme likes to roam around in her sleep, but how does she get naked AND dirty? I hope we get an episode where we join her on her nightly excursions.

Anya may have overcome the short skirt for her maid uniform, but bloomers for her PE uniform? Impossible!

10 Second Anime - Soul Eater Not! - Episode 3

Soul Eater Not! - Episode 3

 photo 10SecondAnime-SoulEaterNot-Episode3_zpscc3183fa.gif

The witch of the dorms isn't all that bad, even if she does give out bad stage names. Clay and Akane used to be in the EAT class. Hint of the Big Bad?

Heh.

Gargantos... This is going to be a thing to see how Tsugumi uses this exclamation each episode. I guess it's like "Dude," for me.

Clay and Akane better not be a reference to Clay Aiken.

Kim, the witch of the girl's dorm, used to be so cute. What happened?

Why does it take a spinoff story that's basically a prologue to the original Soul Eater to explain why Soul Eater, Black Star, and Death The Kid had such weird names when their partners had normal ones? Eternal Feather (heh) uses her strange stage name as an example of a naughty thing Kim did, submitting the paperwork for her.

Finally in the third episode we get an explanation for the title of this show. They're not just telling us it's "not" the same Soul Eater story, but there are two classes for the Weapon and Meister students. NOT, for Normally Overcome Target, and EAT, for Exceptionally Advantaged Talent. It's all the kids in the EAT class that we saw in the first Soul Eater storyline. Two tracks for magic using students? This sounds familiar... Interestingly enough, all the kids share the same dorms, and there doesn't seem to be any animosity between the kids for having different abilities.

Tsugumi is such a nice girl, thinking that anyone that hums while making food can't be a bad person. Nice, but naĆÆve.

Hmm.

We got the barest glance at the Big Bad for the season, after she's been sending out minions under the moniker Traitor, and asking Death Weapon Meister Academy students if they slept well last night. We know that Kim is having nightmares of her old cute self attacking her, so this might all be related.

Clay and Akane used to be in the EAT class, and they are indeed operating undercover, going so far as to address their old classmates like Ox Ford as their senior. Mr. Sid seems to be in on the covert operation.

Anya mentions that she ran away from the castle to enroll in DWMA, so maybe this is why she needs secret bodyguards? And was Traitor attacking students just to look for her?

Why is Ox trying so hard to protect Kim anyway? He goes so far as to take part time jobs to pay back the money she takes from other people. Is she still the school idol to him?

I will say that anyone that carries cute Band-Aids and uses healing magic is probably not a bad person.

10 Second Anime - Soul Eater Not! - Episode 2

Soul Eater Not! - Episode 2

 photo 10SecondAnime-SoulEaterNot-Episode2_zpse5a7651a.gif

Our fua-fua show begins now. The girls have to work part-time at a cafe. And some guys too?

Heh.

The little facial reactions of our girls, Tsugumi, Anya, and Meme are one of the key features of this show, and something I'm going to be looking forward to each week. From Anya's blushing tsundere expressions, to Tsugumi's strange outbursts (why Gargantos?), to Meme's sleepy, dazed questions.

Sleep fighting is good. Now we see why Meme has come to Death City.

How all the girls lose their allowance fits their personalities as we know them. Anya having no idea of the value of money, having never worried about it before we presume, blows it all on kitschy items from the market. Tsugumi figures she has to pay back a bully for smacking down the dorm mother when she was doing her best impression of Kathy Bates from Misery. And, of course, Meme forgets where she put her envelope of money.

The capable dudes have a reason for shadowing the girls: they're bodyguards for the "princesses." Now, we're supposed to assume Anya is a princess, but is Meme one too? Is Tsugumi a designated one? Interesting stuff, plus they have to work at the Deathbucks Caffe too.

Anya taking to waitressing, plus having to wear a short skirt, is pure cute girls doing cute things material.

Looks like the dorm is going to be full of interesting characters too, with "The Witch" and the fortune teller doing her best impersonation of Renge-chon from Non Non Biyori.

Hmm.

We're still very much in establishing the settings and characters our fluffy girls will be dealing with, but everything I've seen so far is fine. With our main characters following their archetypes faithfully, plus the satisfying reaction shots, I'm going to be happy watching this show. We've got the barest hint of underlying drama with our capable dudes, Clay and Akane, as the girls' secret bodyguards. Something to look forward to.

Soul Eater Not! - Episode 1

 photo PreviewGifAnime-SoulEaterNot-Episode1_zps79e64144.gif

What if Soul Eater was a fua-fua cute girls doing cute things anime? Soul Eater Not! answers this question. Pretty well, too.

Heh.

All the fun things about Death City are back. From the creepy, laughing sun, small appearances by the major characters from the original story, to the same teachers and random violence. As Mr. Sid says, "it's this kind of school, after all."

The cute girls are cute. Which means we need to have our weekly dosage of no-pan, zettai ryouiki, and accidental boob groping. Their personalities aren't very original either, with the ojousama tsundere and the air-head type as part of our weapon-meister rabu triangle, but they're not annoying.

Side characters look interesting, with a pair of background dudes who look very capable, but not looking for trouble, at least not yet. I like how one always wants to rush in to help, and the other holds him back to see if they actually need to. Even if it's just a girl negotiating a taxi ride at the airport.

Facial expressions literally made me heh. That's a good thing.

Since these are the weapons and meisters just learning how to be weapons and meisters, instead of the more experienced students we were introduced to in the original, having a halberd show up without edges was nice. Someone's Maka admiration is showing...

Eh?!

Incomplete weapon transformation shows up as a sword though a head. Steve Martin, call your office.

Meh.

I could have done without the two punks hitting on the girls so early in the show, but it was a good enough introduction to "this kind of school." At least they were more bravado and less skilled than advertised. I look forward to what the capable looking dudes can do.

Hmm.

I usually don't like spin-offs in anime, and I avoided that Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya show like the plague, even though I'm a big fan of the Fate/ series. But Soul Eater has been off television for a long time, so this seems more like a nostalgic trip back to your college town after many years. The show looks good enough to blog, so we'll see how the next episode goes, when it's not introducing the main characters and the setting.
