Hyperdimension Neptunia The Animation - Episode 7 - Iris Heart

As I thought, Iris Heart's G-string during Pluto's transformation was a little too much for the television censors >_>

10 Second Anime - Hyperdimension Neptunia - Episode 12 [END]

Hyperdimension Neptunia - Episode 12 [END]

Tari wants to destroy the world. The other console goddesses come to help Neptune. They take out her weapons with great teamwork. But as Tari tries one last attack, a superior villain steals her thunder. Planeptune throws a party to celebrate.

Hah! They even mentioned the Great Tari Crash. The Japanese dialog actually called it what the Japanese called it in 1983, Tari Shock. In the anime's version of events, Tari tried to tell her citizens how to act, and they lost faith in her, and her share power collapsed. However, in the real world, Atari lost control of publishing standards for third party developers, and the market was glutted with horrible games. The market collapsed from $3 billion in revenue worldwide in 1983 to only $100 million in 1985.

These days, when most of the thousands of apps that Apple and Google like to crow about are mainly single function "fart apps," this situation does not hurt their profit margins, since there's no inventory space, and most of them are free. Back in 1983, physical cartridges had to be sold in toy stores with limited space, and the console makers had no control over the quality of these games. When the hardware of the Atari 2600 could easily handle the graphics of the arcade versions of Pac-Man or Zaxxon, but the home console version looked nothing like them, it's no wonder the consumers ran away, and the toy stores decided home gaming was just a fad.

Atari could not control what third party developers could publish and market to toy stores. Hell, all the fast food restaurants at the time had their own horrible branded versions of Frogger or Pac-Man, and they weren't free, or you could get them with Happy Meals. No wonder the whole thing collapsed. Nintendo had to sneak back into America as an "entertainment system" and had to market terrible accessories to convince Toys R Us that they weren't "consoles," "cartridges," or "joysticks." This is why you have unwieldy names today, like game paks, controller pads, or main systems. Good times, good times. Also. Pong Laser. That's just gratuitous, but I'm just pointing it out, not complaining.

Anyway, the goddesses give their all, and thwart Tari's suicidal terrorism, but she still has some share power left to take out the city. But the real villain of all console gaming comes to save (?) the day, Arfiore (piracy). She makes a miniature version of her anti-crystal pyramid, and drains the last share from Tari's crystal. I guess she didn't take to eggplant farming after all. She claims she's just saving the world of Gamindustri for herself to conquer someday. Sure. Piracy is really parasitism anyway, so she had to protect the host. Good tapeworm. Sit.

And then, after some rebuilding from the damage, we have a party. Neptune declares the friendship treaty null and void, because they don't need it anymore. They're real friends. Aww. Victory Slash!

10 Second Anime - Hyperdimension Neptunia - Episode 11

Hyperdimension Neptunia - Episode 11

Planeptune's share has increased dramatically, so Neptune wants to throw a party. The other goddesses aren't so happy about that, since share increase means share decrease some place else. An ancient goddess awakens, showing herself as the source of the increased share.

Well, I'll just spoil everything and say that the mastermind behind the PC plot, and Anonydeath's client was the hidden personality of the useless social activist. Her true name: Tari. As in Atari. Talk about ancient video game empires. The Atari name that is out there today is not the same one from the 80's that made the console, and died with the advent of PC gaming in America. The current one is just a holding company that owns several publishing licenses. The mid 1990's was a dark time for console gaming, with only Nintendo and Sega battling for supremacy. Much like this episode when Lowee blames Neptune for the her decrease in share and accuses her of stealing.

It turns out the continent of Planeptune was built on the ruins of Tari (oh man, this is actually so true on many levels, from consoles, to game titles, to arcade machines), and now the goddess wants her land back. Interesting things to note about her power: it's the same color and consistency as the share draining goop from the Forgotten Games island in the previous Arfiore arc. The bottom of Tari's floating ruin seems to be housing another machine and share crystal like the external one that powered PC. Does this share draining vortex explain why Planeptune was gaining share at the expense of her goddess friends?

Her land's communications are cut off and the other console lands have no idea what is happening. Can Neptune save her land by herself? Nice cliffhanger for the penultimate episode!

10 Second Anime - Hyperdimension Neptunia - Episode 10

Hyperdimension Neptunia Episode 10

War and civil unrest in Gamindustri. PC and Neptune fight. Plots get thwarted. PC can't remember anything, but pudding makes it all better.

That was quite emotional at the end. All the modding on PC damaged some hard drive sectors, and the data couldn't be recovered... I mean her memories of Neptune were blacked out, which made her easier to control. The subplot of demanding cross platform software was used as a tool for civil unrest, but that was done by the same goop that caused the CPU's to lose their share power in Arfiore's earlier plot. Anonydeath's client also provided him with external share power to maintain PC's goddess form. But Noire and Pluto made quick work of that, and PC became a little girl again. However, she couldn't remember anything from after she entered this Gamindustri planet from the other dimension.

We must remember though, in a cute-girls-do-cute-things magical girls anime genre, there must be a sentimental catharsis when a story arc ends. As Pluto and PC are leaving back to their own dimension, Neptune gives PC a present of pudding with her name on it, since that was PC's favorite thing to do. Not just eat pudding, but eat Neptune's pudding. You could see the little heartbreak in Neptune's face when PC asked her what it was. But as the gate between dimensions closed, PC remembered her and called out Neptune's name. And then she was gone. That almost-everything-but-not-quite feeling is very Japanese, and it was well done here.

Oh, you want a little more of that almost-but-not-quite feeling? Here, have a crayon drawing that Neptune found cleaning up PC's room afterwards of PC and Neptune sharing pudding.

10 Second Anime - Hyperdimension Neptunia - Episode 9

Hyperdimension Neptunia - Episode 9

Neptune tries to distract herself from missing PC by slaying monsters. Know that feel... Pluto knocks some sense into Neptune. The other CPUs discover a new nation in R-18 island. And Anonydeath wants to force the consoles to port adult games!

Yeah, the goddess form for PC is so well-endowed, even Vert is feeling jealous. And those big guns on R-18 are still harmless, this time firing yellow balloons instead of bubbles.

But there is still a larger conspiracy here. Someone broke Anonydeath out of prison, let him have that equipment to power PC up, or at least modify her so she can transform, and co-opted the anti-console activist.

I like how the show is making a social statement, though. In Japan, the "adult" parts of visual novels, what we might call adventure games, except with a lot more talking, and fewer puzzles, can only be played on PCs, which is a very small market compared to the gaming consoles. Mainly attributed to how utilities treated internet access, and slow growth infrastructure, gaming and internet use is dominated by portable devices. As a result, PC games are very expensive in Japan. In this anime, as we saw earlier with the villain Arfiore taking on piracy and cracked gaming cartridges, we have another villain attacking the dominance of gaming consoles, and how conservative Japanese values do not allow adult-natured content in games to be played on them.

So, how can our good-girl consoles remain pure if they have to deal with censoring, in the form of steam, light beams, and mosaics?

10 Second Anime - Hyperdimension Neptunia - Episode 8

Hyperdimension Neptunia - Episode 8

Really, stop messing with girls' pudding. A visit to the R-18 Island means bright rays of light follow everywhere. Then PC gets entranced and kidnapped!

PC and Neptune are still fighting over pudding. Meanwhile the console CPU's get reports of some strange artillery being installed on the adults only island of R-18. Heh. That's the Japanese code for restricted to 18 years and over for video games. As the they fly to the island, they make sure Pluto does not transform to goddess mode. Double heh. On this island, you either wear a bikini or go nude all the time. But if you go nude, the convenient censor rays of light follow you around. Boo! Pluto gets to transform anyway when their guide gets caught slipping a roofie into Neptune's drink.

Back at Planeptune, the younger girls have their own pool party on the patio, but PC gets kidnapped by someone pretending to be her mother. She hacks PC to give her access... well, she hypnotizes her to call her Mama, and whisks her away. And she's working for the stalker from Episode 6! PC is gone before Neptune can make up with her.

10 Second Anime - Hyperdimension Neptunia - Episode 7

Hyperdimension Neptunia - Episode 7

Eggplant is not that bad... oh. Maybe it is. Don't mess with a girl's pudding. It took 7 episodes to explain the Hyperdimension part of this anime's name. And can a heroine out-villain the villain?

More than one dimension, eh? Oh, right. Hyper. Dimension. It's only in the title of the anime. So this is where Pluto came from, the cpu of Planeptune in her dimension. Where Neptune is the ditzy genki-girl (lots of energy, a bit hyper) type, Pluto is the ditzy sleepy type. That is, until she transforms into Goddess mode. She warns them she's been encouraged to do so as little as possible.

Pluto has been sent to this dimension to find some source of great energy that was transferred over, but no one knows what it is, so they need to look for anything new or powerful that seems out of place. As if some little kid running around with an insane uppercut doesn't fit that bill...

Arfiore returns to hassle Neptune with a plot that is straight out of PokĆ©mon's Team Rocket's playbook: buy an eggplant farm because Neptune hates eggplants. And torturing IF like that is not suggestive at all. No sir. The Goddesses come to save the day, Pluto transforms, and shows Arfiore how a sadistic mistress is supposed to do things. Apparently, Pluto's outfit is a bit too revealing from behind for the censors >_>. Oh, and nice homage to Akira's motorcycle slide out.

10 Second Anime - Hyperdimension Neptunia - Episode 6

Hyperdimension Neptunia - Episode 6

Noire seems to have a new hobby, the other consoles are worried about network security, the new PC likes getting in trouble, and someone has been spying on Noire too.

This new little girl, PC, has just insinuated herself into Neptune land. Is she a reference to PC gaming? Then why is she not related to Vert from Leanbox? Is she dressed like a bee? Is that making a pun on Windows 8, since hachi is both 8 and bee? Speaking of relating to Leanbox, Nepgear is taking this little sister borrowing seriously, as she makes nice visits to Leanbox. Meanwhile, Uni is concerned enough about big sister Noire's new habit of locking herself in her room for hours, that she asks Nepgear for help in planting a wireless camera.

While these nefarious activities are happening, the other consoles are having a meeting on network security, and discover a way of tracking a hacker's location. Coincidently, Nepgear's camera experiences cross-channel interference (a common occurrence with some of the Sega Saturn's peripherals. MAC address? What's that?), finding other cameras already planted in Noire's room, and the younger sisters trace that camera signal to the same place as the hacker. And what was Noire's new hobby? Sewing cosplay outfits, of course.

The reason for the hacking was to find PC, according to the hacker after he was caught. Why? Dunno. And while we're processing that obvious cliffhanger, another girl falls out of the sky, and claims she is Plutia, Planeptune's CPU. Eeeeh!!?

10 Second Anime - Hyperdimension Neptunia - Episode 5

Hyperdimension Neptunia - Episode 5

Magical girl transformations complete!

For an anime about magical girls being the personification of gaming consoles, the whole premise is thoroughly consistent. We have Sega Saturn, Nintendo Wii, Sony Playstation, and Microsoft Xbox represented, with Neptunia, Lowee, Lastation, and Leanbox as their respective territories. Each of those consoles with handheld companions gets a little sister (Nintendo gets 2!), so Xbox gets left out of the imouto department. The main villain is named Arfiore, which represents R4, the cartridge manufacturer, which is primarily used to play cracked games on the Japanese consoles and handhelds.

With the villain having captured the main console goddesses, and draining their share energy (market share, poor Sega...), the little sisters power up, transform into goddess mode, and save the day from evil piracy.
