That mystery girl on the cliff last episode was the new armored carrier Taihou. As someone who just watched the anime and doesn't know anything about the online card game, my reaction was more along the lines of "Oh, new character introduced in the last episode? She better be the main character for the sequel."

 

The admiral is fine. I mean, I have to take the girls' word for it. We still never saw him.

 

Taihou didn't do that much, but I guess she's important enough to grab the eye catch.

The fleet girls begin their major operation but many things don't go as planned.

The big operation is about to start, but that doesn't mean the cute girls can't do their final preparations cutely.

 

Kitakami and Ooi aren't going to be in the same squadron? That can't be good.

 

I don't understand this cliché. Why do young flat-chested girls hate milk so much? Is it the high incidence rate of lactose intolerance in Asian countries? Even knowing Atago and Takao love their milk, it's not enough to goad Ikazuchi into drinking her own.

Fubuki desperately seeks experience to achieve an upgrade while her friends worry about her recklessness.

Heh.

I was reminded of the 2nd episode where Fubuki had to train hard to get up to speed as a fleet girl. Here we have her trying too hard again, but with the added baggage of Mutsuki not wanting to see her get sunk by rash actions to confront the enemy and gain enough experience to level up.

 

Oh ho, Akagi wants to be in a special relationship with Fubuki. Her escort, she says...

 

I'm still not sure what all the garbled codes means for the story and how the Abyssals are involved. I still think Kisaragi is going to show up as an Abyssal.

 

Those codes are giving Ooyodo a hard time.

Yuudachi becomes available for an upgrade, but trouble back at the Naval Base leads to a change in strategy.

Heh.

I've never played the game, so I can only guess that Yuudachi glowing so brightly is a nod to the game mechanics that a ship has enough experience or what-not and is ready for an upgrade. Yuudachi Kai get!

 

So many things better left secret in the dark bowels of the factory...

 

Aw. Even though Yuudachi has a fiercer personality after the upgrade, she still throws in a "poi" for her speaking habits. Just not as many.

 

The eye catch is all about the soul of a torpedo girl.

The fleet girls transfer to a forward base and meet the powerful new ship Yamato there. Cute girls do cute things on a tropical island resort.

Episode 8? Beach episode? Of course!

 

For girls who are always in the water, it's kind of weird that their beach outfits are swimsuits, but that's fanservice anime logic for you.

 

You can tell the relative "ages" of the ship girls by the fanciness of their swimsuits. Fubuki and her friends - age appropriate gym one piece swimsuits. Nagato and Yamato - way, way, way too fancy.

 

The Yamato character mirrors the history of the actual WWII era Yamato battleship. So powerful, yet so expensive to operate, it was barely used in the war.

 

How much fuel does Yamato need to move around? Just standing on the water for a few minutes with Fubuki gives her Akagi level hunger pangs.

Fubuki's squadron continues to be successful, but their teamwork still needs improvement. The Abyssals appear to have a disturbing advantage.

When a fleet controls more territory, supply lines get longer? Wow. I've only seen this kind of realistic strategic consequence in RTS game adaptations... Oh! I mean, sure, the ships have nice little pictures of cute girls, but all their stats belong to actual navy ships.

 

The Abyssals may have cracked the fleet's code. Or perhaps they got them some other way. Like maybe the sunken ships aren't as sunken as we thought they were.

 

I still can't get over why the carrier ships hate launching recon sorties. Carriers should like to know where stuff is to blow up later.

 

Note to self: dive bombing is faster than torpedo dropping.

The stakes are high for the annual curry cooking contest. The winner's recipe is served in the mess hall and Nagato has to judge the winner.

Heh.

I will never understand the fascination anime and manga culture have with curry, but it's a thing, so for a show that's entirely fanservice for Kantai Collection game enthusiasts, we have a curry cooking fanservice episode.

 

Our three main girls are barely in it, so our "ppoi" count was very low.

 

Bauxite is the ore that is refined into aluminum. Akagi the aircraft carrier seems to have a hankering for the mineral. She's hungry for anything she can absorb.

 

Instead of bubble wrap, Akagi messed around with one of those wire puzzles where you have to separate the pieces. She spends a lot of time in the healing bath.

 

The sixth destroyer group girls don't do a lot of fighting, but they do bring back the goods. Like special bauxite. Akagi is pleased.

The Admiral reorganizes the fleet, but the members of the new Mobile Unit 5 wonder how effective they can be. This impossible squadron chooses an impossible flagship.

Aren't company reorgs the worst?

 

The torpedo girls have to change roommates, but they'll always be torpedo girls at heart. Yay, Torpedo Girls!

 

Akagi is still a big eater. She finished her huge dessert while Fubuki wasn't even halfway done.

 

Oh man, after seeing the weirdo lesbo girls and the mean girl passive aggressive fighting, I would have been shedding tears of relief too with a big huge glomp from Kongou.

 

Kongou's Japanese English-Japanese accent is still annoying to my ears. At least she's cute and genki. Maybe we'll have to start up a "shit!" counter for her.

 

These ship girls do spend an awful lot of time in the dock for repairs. I'm not complaining since the "dock" is the spa.

 

With Fubuki in another fleet, the "poi" count from Yuudachi is going to go way down per episode. If you've been playing the "poi" drinking game at home, your liver does the dance of joy.

 

Fubuki was so hopeful she would be assigned to Akagi's fleet.

The torpedo girls are suffering low morale. Fubuki goes on a mission with the Kongou sisters and learns the importance of consoling friends.

Heh.

Fubuki's image of an elegant lady for Kongou died a pretty quick death. She still has eyes for Akagi, but I think that's because she didn't notice that she has a thing for popping bubble wrap. I'm beginning to think none of the ship girls are normal...

 

Shimakaze is supposed to be a fast destroyer, but the character is also hyper and has a very short attention span.

 

Kongou may be crazy, and who wouldn't from being born in Britain before being transferred to Japan, but her sisters are just as crazy... for her.

 

I find it hilarious when voice actors try to mimic an English speaker trying to use Japanese, but it just sounds like slower louder Japanese with sprinkled in English words spoken with a Japanese accent. Apparently, saying bad English words doesn't get censored... Yes, she actually said "Shit!"

I'll tell you, the only time I ever heard English spoken with an American accent by a seemingly native speaker was in a kid show called Shugo Chara!. Don't judge me - it was a cute show!

 

Kongou is crazy... for the admiral!

A surprise attack mission for the torpedo squadron doesn't go as planned. Although successful, the fleet loses one of their ships.

Heh.

Reverse death flag? That was pretty good. I felt they were pouring it on pretty thick with Mutsuki waiting to tell her sister ship Kisaragi something after the mission was over, but then to have Kisaragi trigger the flag instead was an interesting turn of events. Oh, I'm sure she'll be back as an Abyssal Fleet member and there'll be all the angst that entails.

 

Akagi's point about being open with your feelings with your fleet mates was well taken. They are military personnel after all in a time of war, so any chance you have to tell your friends your feelings of friendship, gratitude, whatever, is a chance you need to take to live without regrets.

 

The eye catch wants you to focus on the Secretary Ships Nagato and Mutsu.

Fubuki is good with military technical info, but is terrible at battle skills. The other girl ships help her get up to speed.

I think we just went through the tutorial mission at the start of a game.

 

Akagi is an aircraft carrier. Of course she has to eat a lot!

 

What was up with the girls' names on their PE jerseys spelled backwards? Instead of Fu-bu-ki, it was Ki-bu-fu. And Sendai had the same thing. Instead of Se-n-da-i, it was I-da-n-se. What's that about?

 

Um, Fubuki doesn't look top heavy... Oh, maybe only when she has her battle gear on.

In a world where special girls embody the spirits of famous Japanese warships, they fight against a mysterious fleet which has overtaken much of the ocean. Anime adaptation of the online card game and other media outlets. Series premiere.

First Thoughts.

Oh yes! It's the second coming of Arpeggio, Strike Witches, and Upotte!!! It's a cute girls doing cute things anime, if the cute things include launching torpedoes at submarine type enemies that look like whales. Using the newcomer Fubuki to introduce us to the new school life is a normal thing to do for this genre, think Strike Witches, Sky Girls, Vividred Operation, etc., but she's a likeable character and it is a good way to meet the other characters and take a tour of the setting. Also good is how she's thrown right into battle as soon as she gets there. Besides the cute girls, the other main draw is supposed to be the CGI naval warfare, and this is the best I've seen. It was a great device to have the Fleet Girls travel as if they were skating. Some skate like speed skaters, others like hockey players or rollerbladers. Maybe we'll see a figure skater later on. This was a great introductory episode and I'm looking forward to what a normal episode will look like.
