10 Second Anime - Shokugeki no Soma - Episode 7

Souma and Ikumi battle over cooking the best donburi using beef. The quality of the beef does not decide the contest.

We had a quick bit of flavor of what these Shokugeki look like when Erina demolished the sumo guy's club, but we got the full ceremony with Souma and Ikumi. It's like a boxing match with an emcee, a ring, and elaborate entrances.

 

Ikumi wears so little, but I guess what little she does wear has to have an impact. I was partial to the cowboy outfit myself.

 

Ikumi's reputation for choosing meat and butchering it were well deserved.

I liked how we spent most of the episode on how she prepared her dish instead of Souma. We'd already seen most of what Souma was going to do last episode, so from a storytelling perspective, having him surprise us with his winning solutions was the best way to go.

 

Besides, we got a healthy dose Ikumi fanservice out of it, and even some from the female judge reacting sensuously to Ikumi's beef.

Of course, Ikumi lost.

As I suspected, it almost all came down to the rice. Where Ikumi doubled down on beef flavor with her garlic rice, Souma complemented the rice flavor with pickled plum sauce. Ikumi's rice competed with her beef for the palate's attention.

 

Ha! Half price off on Souma's meat. Lucky!

 

It ended up being pretty good for Ikumi to join the donmono research club. Erina took away her kitchen for losing to Souma, so she needed to go somewhere for her extracurricular cooking activities. Too bad her crush on Souma won't get anywhere since he never intended to join the club anyway. What a tease, that Souma guy.

Geh.

Ikumi's character design was made for fanservice, much to the dismay of the idol wannabe emcee.

 

Ikumi needed the right top to make an entrance and an impact.

Her breasts are hot with all that fire! Those flames look a bit like hands giving her extra support...

For a tough girl whose main features are her chest and her sexy figure, Ikumi has great eyes and plump lips. Very expressive, especially when using her sensitive lips for gauging temperature or suffering an impending foodgasm.

The best part of the whole episode was Ikumi's reluctant attraction to Souma.

Hnng! White socks on that dark skin... Part of her reaction must come from her memory of being told to act tough and masculine, never mind how she dresses, so being told that she is "cute" after so many years, especially during a vulnerable moment, just made her heart flutter. It seems to have stuck too. Yes, Nikumi is a cute name. Besides, her surname is Mito, which sounds like "meat" in English, so there were many "niku" (meat) puns to be made with name.

 

 

Hmm.

One thing that was glossed over was how much time Souma spent on tweaking his sauce recipe. He said he only had two hours of sleep before the contest. The pacing of the episode makes it look like he wins these things easily, but Souma's talent is his obsessive concentration on trial and error. Now that his brashness has been backed up with results in the eyes of the rest of the school, it will be interesting going forward to see how Souma deals with situations where he can't rely on his knowledge to improvise a solution and will actually require time to figure something out.
