Souma moves into his new dorm and meets new friends and challenges.

Heh.

What a nice change of pace. There was still a cooking challenge involving a foodgasm, but it wasn't the climax of the episode. Instead, we had the size and scope of the Totsuki Culinary Academy established in a short walk to Souma's dorm, we met the crazy residents there, and some of the school politics was introduced as an overall plot device.

 

Souma is definitely the King of Leftovers. His real skill is improvisation, but that's best applied to whatever is left over in the kitchen.

 

Fumio used to be hot! H-A-W-T HOT! And she appears to be an excellent cook in her own right.

 

Souma still showed his genius side. Most people don't get past Fumio's cooking challenge on the first try. Megumi doesn't want to admit to Souma that she spent 3 months trying to move in.

Ryou and Kirin meet the downstairs neighbor Yuki, share a pizza and show how friendship makes food taste better.

Heh.

All this angst the girls have about going to a new school reminds me how close to the end of the season it is for this series. That's a bit sad, but a revelation at the end of this episode makes me hopeful for a sequel.

 

Kirin is a physical monster! She apologized to Yuki for using her railing to save her life. Hilarious, and scary!

 

Children, be careful playing with railings and open windows.

 

How could such a skittish, shy person ever be a teacher?

Souma makes quite the impression on people, right? The nonchalance, ignorance and confidence that make up his personality painted a target on his back as soon as he got to school. That speech he gave as the transfer student was golden!

 

I was looking forward to Erina's reaction to Souma attending over her rejection and I was not disappointed. The way the music swelled as Souma placed his twelve years of practical experience over the 3 years of cooking lessons for the junior high students made me want to root for Souma even more. Good job.

 

Souma's got to be Souma, even with potential allies and friends.

Ryou is such a good girl. Doing all the house cleaning before Kirin even shows up. She'll make a fantastic housewife...

Aw nertz. I guess we're allowed only one bath episode this season. They had the perfect cue for another one when Ryou needed to find one more thing to clean and it was herself. Ah well, there's always the OVA's.

If Shiina starred in her own anime, it wouldn't be in the cute girls do cute things genre. She would definitely be in the Mysterious Girlfriend genre. She keeps making those sidelong glances and saying ominous things about her house over the holidays. What's going on over there, Shiina?

After an impromptu cook-off, Souma learns about the formal Shokugeki (Food War) system at cooking school.

This Isshiki guy is quite the weirdo. Giving naked apron "service" to the ladies, whether they want it or not. I like him already.

 

Souma and the background music got ready for a big rematch with Isshiki, then... denied!

 

This shokugeki (食戟) cooking duel system confirms the show's format as tournament style battle anime. There doesn't have to be an overall plot now, just the premise fills it out, and we can watch Souma have cooking adventures and meet interesting characters. Oh, and learn about cooking! The geki part of the word is another one of those Japanese homonym puns. Geki can mean drama, theatrical display, martial attack, many things meaning "clash" in context, but the kanji used is a specific character for a Chinese polearm Ji.

 

Souma already knows many of the foreign cooking techniques from his dad. He just never learned their names or where they came from. Souma's dad seemed to want to keep his cooking travels to himself.

 

The little girl Yuki who keeps animals in her room (presumably to kill them later...) is going to provide a lot of funny reaction faces.

Shinomiya was awfully deferential to Dojima. Hinako too.

 

We saw before how much of a character Hinako could be during her session with Souma and Megumi, but wow! She is hilarious.

 

Faking a fake accent speaking Japanese sounds so fake.

 

Good for Megumi for being mad at Souma for butting in. And she does have a rural accent!

 

The main cooking music theme was used to great nostalgic effect as Megumi tried to plan a dish that was her very own. It got to my shriveled up heart.

 

Yeah, I don't know how long I'd stand that gibbering from Hinako either.

Souma and Ikumi battle over cooking the best donburi using beef. The quality of the beef does not decide the contest.

Heh.

We had a quick bit of flavor of what these Shokugeki look like when Erina demolished the sumo guy's club, but we got the full ceremony with Souma and Ikumi. It's like a boxing match with an emcee, a ring, and elaborate entrances.

 

Ikumi wears so little, but I guess what little she does wear has to have an impact. I was partial to the cowboy outfit myself.

 

Ikumi's reputation for choosing meat and butchering it were well deserved.
