After an impromptu cook-off, Souma learns about the formal Shokugeki (Food War) system at cooking school.
Heh.
This Isshiki guy is quite the weirdo. Giving naked apron "service" to the ladies, whether they want it or not. I like him already.
Souma and the background music got ready for a big rematch with Isshiki, then... denied!
This shokugeki (食戟) cooking duel system confirms the show's format as tournament style battle anime. There doesn't have to be an overall plot now, just the premise fills it out, and we can watch Souma have cooking adventures and meet interesting characters. Oh, and learn about cooking! The geki part of the word is another one of those Japanese homonym puns. Geki can mean drama, theatrical display, martial attack, many things meaning "clash" in context, but the kanji used is a specific character for a Chinese polearm Ji.
Souma already knows many of the foreign cooking techniques from his dad. He just never learned their names or where they came from. Souma's dad seemed to want to keep his cooking travels to himself.
The little girl Yuki who keeps animals in her room (presumably to kill them later...) is going to provide a lot of funny reaction faces.
Ha! That's right, Souma! Why are you surprised at the French sautee technique when you're the one who used it? Oh, right. His dad wasn't very talkative.
Isshiki, who ranks higher than Erina in the Elite 10, has taken to Souma quite quickly.
We'll see if that changes the more he samples Souma's terrible tasting dish creation hobby.
In the other part of the story, where we saw the cooking duel in action, Erina still has these random intrusions into food tasting visualizations.
That hippo was thinking the same thing as Erina, "What are you doing here?"
Geh.
The explanation for Souma's dish and its theme of Spring and the first sprouting bud was taking so long, I began to think people weren't going to get naked. And then people got naked.
The kid who never shows his eyes didn't join in the sprouting display. We'd seen enough of Isshiki's backside. He also said Isshiki didn't bring his A-game. Well, we can't reveal everything by the 5th episode, but we have some story threads to look forward to now.
Ryouko is going to be our resident source of sexpot eye candy.
Good thing too, since Erina doesn't live in that dorm, and Megumi is too much of "nice" girl to show a lot of skin.
Yay, more Erina!
If good seafood makes her think of tropical islands and bikinis, well, I want her to eat more seafood!
And then, God Bless America!
Or, at the very least, flag themed binini tops. Ikumi, the "Meat Master" (hnnnggg), was introduced as the next antagonist. Dealing with meat (hurr) and her blade skills make me think she's going to be directly opposed to Souma and Yuki somehow. Bring it on!
This school has some nice form fitting cooking uniforms...
Ikumi made a dramatic introduction. The lighting was dramatic, I mean.
Hmm.
Now that the actual Shokugeki in the name of the show has been explained, the adventures can start. I can easily see the conditions for each match providing plot twists, side quests and dramatic victories. I'm looking forward to this, but I hope the show doesn't devolve into a series of battle arcs. There's too many characters and the simple premise of Souma's dad challenging him to grow as a chef means the story could be a very wide ranging comedic adventure.
