10 Second Anime - Shokugeki no Soma - Episode 4



Souma moves into his new dorm and meets new friends and challenges.

Heh.

What a nice change of pace. There was still a cooking challenge involving a foodgasm, but it wasn't the climax of the episode. Instead, we had the size and scope of the Totsuki Culinary Academy established in a short walk to Souma's dorm, we met the crazy residents there, and some of the school politics was introduced as an overall plot device.

 

Souma is definitely the King of Leftovers. His real skill is improvisation, but that's best applied to whatever is left over in the kitchen.

 

Fumio used to be hot! H-A-W-T HOT! And she appears to be an excellent cook in her own right.

 

Souma still showed his genius side. Most people don't get past Fumio's cooking challenge on the first try. Megumi doesn't want to admit to Souma that she spent 3 months trying to move in.

She has tenacity, I'll give her that. Did she camp out in the front yard or something during that time?

 

This show has flights of fancy with its foodgasm scenes, but I appreciated the 4th Wall breaking humor with Isshiki. Those were real bubbles... being blown by underclassmen.

Each of the students in the dorm appear to have a specialty, like smoking food, preparing fresh vegetables and herbs, making *cough* "rice juice," or having the cutsiest girl attracted to killing fresh game.

Gah! She's got strong hands from wringing goose necks!

 

All these guys are a bit crazy in their own way, so Souma and his hobby of feeding his friends terrible tasting dishes is going to fit right in.

Megumi didn't mention a specialty and neither did Issiki, except for his naked apron habit that the bro dudes seemed to appreciate the most. But Isshiki can make others have foodgasms like Souma does. The big reveal for him is that he is part of the Elite 10 that comprise an advisory committee for Erina's grandpa, and that he is Number 7.

 

 

Geh.

We didn't have much in the way of naked foodgasms, except for Souma getting blasted by sakura petals after tasting Isshiki's simple dish, but this episode did not neglect the fan service.

Entering a new dorm always means accidentally sneaking a peak at the established Best Girl. Guess who that is for this show. That's right, Megumi. You can't get married now because Souma saw you naked, never mind that you saw him nakeder... but all you have to do is marry HIM and your problems are solved! I hope you get used to tasting terrible squid tentacle dishes.

 

The other fan service moment featured Fumio, and I breathed a sigh of relief that Souma's seafood themed meal evoked a memory-based foodgasm instead of a visceral one.

A mackerel patty and squid soup stock brought Fumio all the way back to an intimate moment by the beach.

That boy was a lucky duck back then. Souma, fighting off grandma age Fumio, not so much.

 

 

Hmm.

With the introduction of the Elite 10 as something to aim for, which I surmise is what Erina's grandpa was referring to when he talked about reaching the top of the school, we got the broad outlines of the overall plot upon which smaller plots and character development will hang upon.

 

I have to wonder if Souma's dad broke off from the way Totsuki does things and he trained his superweapon son to shake up the cooking world when he was old enough. It's always something like that with a hero being trained deep in the mysterious hinterlands only to impress the townspeople when some calamity forces him to rejoin civilization.

 

Souma the yokel hero is in the part of the legend where he collects his band of merry men. Many of those guys start out as skeptical rivals. Issiki is first up, but the competition isn't fighting or dueling. It's cooking! Bring on the next feast already. I'm hungry for more of Souma's story.
