Locodol - Episode 5
The Nagarekawa Girls dream of a National Debut. Saori makes it happen at a mascot contest. The girls pray at a local shrine to a god with a colorful history.
Eh?!
The actual mascot is the big minnow on Uogokoro-kun's back? The big blue thing is just a water spirit that worships it? And the minnow's name is Mulder? Named after the Dutch architect of the canal system running through Nagarekawa? The things you find out if you just ask Yui some questions. That little god the girls pray to has a remarkable history too. Born in America, Billiken became a god of fortune in Osaka. And Nanako was hilarious trying to speak to him in a Kansai dialect and then in English.
Heh.
Set a goal of a national debut. Wait ten seconds. Saori makes it happen. High fives!Yui high-fiving in her mascot suit is just about the most precious thing I've seen in a while, and I'm even counting Anya from Soul Eater Not! smacking a wooden doll with a rolled up piece of paper.
To celebrate, eat a Tanucake. It's a pun, get it? Tanuki cake... Horrible pun, the horror, the horror...
The eye catch follows the pastry theme.
Nanako feels a little left out, because Yukari and Yui have such bright dreams. She used to have a dream, but she can't admit to it anymore, even though it's already happening.
The Nagarekawa Girls already have cute outfits like the one a young Nanako dreamed of. See? Nanako is cute! Nanako is an idol!
Geh.
We didn't have any screen wipes this time around, but the show added these side scrolling pans to keep more of a person in the shot. Used to great effect for mai fua-fua waifu of the season.Yukarin trying to imitate Yui's speaking style was chou-kawaii. She gets extra yuri points as well for trying to take Nanako's clothes off.
Hmm.
There seemed to be a little shift in tone as the girls told each other the history of Nagarekawa, which was related to the details of Uogokoro-kun's design and the local deities. Their main job as local idols is to promote their city to the rest of the nation, not just create a sense of civic pride in its inhabitants. The mascot competition is serious business because of how much the city is spending of its little PR budget. It's time for Yui to shine, and for Nanako and Yukari to help her. I'm not exactly sure what a Cute and Loose Mascot is, but I hope Uogokoro-kun becomes the cutest and the loosest. Um, maybe not that last part...
