10 Second Anime - Naruto Shippuuden - Episode 352

Naruto Shippuuden - Episode 352

Kakashi Shippuuden continues. Orochimaru becomes a rogue ninja, and the 3rd Hokage's ANBU is on the hunt. Danzo sends his wood-style user to their fallback base to meet Orochimaru there. He finds things about himself as well.

We finally got a name for the ninja we know as Yamato, whom Kakashi calls Tenzo. Danzo calls his wood-style user Kinoe. He has a special mission for him: meet Orochimaru at their fallback base because he's on the run from Sarutobi, who confronted him on his experiments. Kakashi tries to go toe to toe with Orochimaru, but the experience levels are too much, and Orochimaru's snake eyes intimidate him. I'm not sure if it was a genjutsu or not, but it looked like Kakashi was paralyzed by fear, or perhaps the hypnotic stare that some snakes use before they strike. Sarutobi prepared a going away present for Orochimaru, though, a booby-trapped snake, which injures him greatly.

Meanwhile, Kinoe finds the fallback base. Along the way, showing that he's still a kind-hearted lad, he saves some baby birds he knocked out of a tree with his wood-style powers. The base is in the trunk of a large tree, occupied by the Iburi clan. Iburu (燻る) means to smoke, so I guess that's fitting that the whole clan has unstable smoke bodies. They are indebted to Orochimaru, who has been experimenting with his curse mark to make them more stable. A little girl there recognizes Kinoe as Tenzo, her younger brother, who was taken from them. It makes sense that only an unstable formless body could handle the Senju cells without exploding into random tree branches. Kinoe has no memories of this clan, only some vague ones of being in test tubes with other children who disappeared one-by-one. This is also the first time we see Tenzo use his scary serious face.

Outside the base, Kakashi has summoned his hunting dogs, and it's been a long time since we've seen Pakkun. He warns Kakashi that trying to sniff out a snake is going to be hard since they don't sweat much. Orochimaru seems to be making progress towards the fallback base too, but Kakashi may have found the entrance before him. The Iburi clan sees a figure approaching their main hall, and it is... the cliffhanger for the next episode. Weird that they didn't show the tracking dogs give Kakashi a pointer towards Orochimaru's location, but that Kakashi found the base entrance randomly.

10 Second Anime - Witch Craft Works - Episode 8

Witch Craft Works - Episode 8

Ayaka learns to be a middle school student, but it was all a dream? Or not? And the former student council president isn't done with Takamiya yet.

This episode seems to be a bit of a breather, but it's still ridiculous. In a flashback, we see two of the student council members back in middle school being asked by Mrs. Kagari to take care of her daughter when she attends their school. Ayaka has a cross-hatched scar around her neck that we've never seen before, and it appears that she's never been socialized to participate in class and be in groups of people. However, during the flashbacks, we see elements that certainly don't belong. Like penguins everywhere, the Tower Witches appear as their younger selves, and Chronoire's alligator familiar also makes appearances. The flashback ends when Ayaka finally finds which school Takamiya has been attending and she sees him for the first time. Then Takamiya wakes up, and the flashbacks are all just a dream he had. But are they? The scar we've never seen before is now on Ayaka's neck when her collar is loose. Although the scar's appearance seems inconsistent, because when Ayaka is in the nurse outfit, the scar is gone. The show has alluded to some kind of accident or incident that happened to Takamiya and Ayaka causing some memory loss. Perhaps with the seals breaking down, those memories are coming back.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Takamiya is very happy to have all the Tower Witches living with them, much to the annoyance of Kasumi. If thing at home have settled into a new normal, things at school have not. Suddenly, a bear-suited gang of delinquents invades the school and starts vandalizing it, and social order breaks down quickly. The attack coincidentally happens on the day Mrs. Kagari was away on some business and has Chronoire stand in for the Chairperson. But since she stands for chaos, like all good Tower Witches, she doesn't do anything stop the destruction. Mr. Mikage is down for the count in the infirmary after falling unconscious somehow. And Kasumi is also somehow absent. Strangely, Ayaka is also doing nothing about the vandalism, instead she's telling Takamiya that this is happening because his approval rating as the new Student Council President is so low. Ah. Something ridiculous and contrived is going to happen.

The vice-vice-president Touko explains that Bear-Killer Rinon, the gang leader, has been provoked to attack the school by the ex-president, who told her terrible lies about Takamiya, even claiming he "used her up as a woman and threw her away." Well, sisterhood roars, and all that. Rinon challenges Takamiya to a fight after school. Ayaka gives Takamiya some pointers on how to beat Rinon, and cheers him on.

10 Second Anime - Saki - The Nationals - Episode 7

Saki - The Nationals - Episode 7

Hisa savors her time at the Nationals. The 4th round is the no-pan round. Kinue kicks Etopen. Nodocchi rises.

With Hisa back to having fun and getting back to her game style, she gains back some of the points she lost in the first half of the round, and savors her time at the National Mahjong Tournament. She's the queen of hell-waits, and assembling her team and getting this far was definitely long on odds.

Next up is what all the cameramen have been waiting for: Nodoka's turn to shine in the 4th round. This is, apparently, the no-pan round, but the other otaku fetishes are well represented. We've got oppai, red glasses, lolis, shrine priestess uniforms, zettai ryouiki, and even school swimsuit tan lines. Sheesh, the Saki producers need to calm down a little...

Because Nodoka's style of play is very methodical and features strong defense, she doesn't even bother studying the styles of her opponents. This is why she is so shocked to see the loli miko just appear in front of her, while Hisa is not surprised at all. Nodoka cares not for your superstitious juju talk... except the loli miko is wearing a voodoo mask. Hisa does the best impression of Nodoka evar!

When Kinu walks in and sees a round stuffed penguin on the floor, her soccer goalie instincts take over, and sends Etopen flying. Silly penguin, you can't fly.

Things settle down, and the match starts. Nodoka has practiced getting into her zone as quickly as possible, and starts off with an immediate win. The other girls, used to sensing mahjong monsters, feel nothing from Nodoka. One wonders if she's like a machine. They don't know that she is the number one online mahjong player in the country known by her avatar as Nodocchi. The other players are starting to power up too, and first off will be the loli miko activating her voodoo juju. How will Nodocchi's defense handle this mahjong monster?

I had a shortened week after the extra couple days of rest after the first 6 week block. This 3 week block is the boring time, where the terrain doesn't matter as much as the concentration on what my legs are doing. It's pretty much "do this thing with your foot/calf/knee/hip/butt until you can't take the pain anymore, do something else until you can't take that pain anymore, then go back to the other painful thing." I've lost 2 more pounds of the holiday weight, with only 1 more pound to go, but I have a feeling I'm going to end up being heavier than last year. Just a bit more muscle mass, I hope. With the cardio and stamina at base fitness, this also means the weekend ride can start going a little bit longer too. Like getting into the hilly parts of Duarte, Glendora, and beyond.

10 Second Anime - Kill la Kill - Episode 19

Kill la Kill - Episode 19

The quick battle turns into the Resistance against Occupied Territories. Ragyo still has plans for Satsuki. Ryuko wakes up after a month and rejects Senketsu.

When the Covers assemble above the stadium, things quickly get out of hand. They start sucking people into themselves and turn into large formidable soldiers. Mako gets taken, much to the horror of Gamagoori. Ryuko, as usual, has trouble processing all the revelations about her family, and becomes ineffective. Satsuki hits the reset button by blowing up the entire stadium, allowing our heroes to escape.

Before we continue, I want to take a moment to explain what these names of Senketsu and Junketsu mean. 鮮血 (senketsu) means fresh blood, named by Ryuko herself. There are many homonyms in Japanese for this word, some mean "acting on one's own," "stink of blood or meat," "meat-eating barbarian," and "first priority." All of these apply in some way to Ryuko when she synchronizes with Senketsu. 純血 (junketsu) means pure blood, or pure-bred or thoroughbred. The primary meaning certainly applied to the implications of Satsuki's notions of class, nobless oblige, and hinted at an ethnocentric fascism with her uniforms and iconography. There are also homonyms for junketsu meaning purity or chastity, which also points toward Satsuki's inability to completely override Junketsu, because she has not explored her sexuality. Even when Satsuki is captured, Ragyo still insists on this training.

10 Second Anime - Naruto Shippuuden - Episode 351

Naruto Shippuuden - Episode 351

Kakashi Shippuuden continues. Sarutobi and Kakashi set a trap for Danzo. Danzo and Orochimaru adjust their plans.

Kakashi knows there's something wrong about the wood style using child he saw at Danzo's Foundation headquarters, and sneaks into the Hokage's secret library to research the unique jutsu of the 1st Hokage, Hashirama Senjuu. The records lead to a secret program to artificially recreate the wood style jutsu, but they are missing. Dramatically, the 3rd Hokage tosses the report to Kakashi, and tells him to read it. The wood style jutsu research is deemed necessary to pursue because only it, and the Uchiha's Sharingan can control the 9-tailed beast. To clarify, only a Sharingan user can summon the 9-tailed Fox while it is free of a Jinchuuriki, and only the wood style jutsu can suppress it. The research was supposed to be abandoned because none of the candidates could survive the experiments. Kakashi knows there's at least one who did. Sarutobi tells him, if any of the kidnapped infants survived the experimentation, they would be about 10 years old now. Which leads to the trap Kakashi sets for Danzo.

Sarutobi may have been chosen to replace the late 4th Hokage, but he still needs the approval of the feudal lord. Danzo had convinced Kakashi to steal the plans for the route the 3rd Hokage would take to travel to the feudal lord's palace, but with his loyalty restored to Sarutobi, Kakashi lays a trap instead. He overpowers the wood style user, but lets him live, telling him that his talent would be necessary to protect the village someday. Back at the Hokage's office, Danzo is celebrating a little too early by trying to get used to the Hokage's chair, but Sarutobi walks in, letting him know of his plan's failure. He also lets Danzo live, instead of being put to death as a traitor, by extracting an oath to protect the village with all of his might.

Danzo immediately pays a visit to Orochimaru letting him know that all of his secret work might be compromised. Obviously the 3rd Hokage, known as the Professor and a man of peace, is still an order of magnitude better at being a sneaky ninja and playing the political subterfuge game than Danzo could ever be. Meanwhile, Kakashi still struggles with his guilt over Rin's death, and with betraying Danzo, is even more on edge that he was before, even to the point of drawing a blade on Guy. The wood style user has also drawn an interest in Kakashi, possibly following him around on Danzo's orders, so Kakashi's edginess is well-placed.

One thing I'm unsure of with this filler arc is whether they'll explain why Kakashi had to kill Rin. The manga fans know why, but that part of the story is several weeks away from being told in the main story with Naruto and Obito. The circumstances of that scene has a large impact on Obito when it is revealed, so I'm not sure the producers want to blunt that impact on the audience. Well, filler is filler, so maybe Kakashi can stop playing Macbeth scenes in his little apartment without explaining the events leading up to Rin's death. It might be something as lame as him finally remembering what Rin said after he pierced her chest.

10 Second Anime - Yowamushi Pedal - Episode 19

Yowamushi Pedal - Episode 19

It's time to catch up on classwork, and catch up on slice-of-life jokes. Onoda feels the weight of the team jersey, but realizes he doesn't carry it alone.

The cycling team spent a week away from school, so that means an even worse hell than 1,000 kilometers awaits them: make-up lectures. Before the classes start, they have time for Miki to notice that Imaizumi and Naruko have gotten stronger, maybe even grown a little. Naruko says that Miki has grown for sure... Smack! We haven't seen Naruko make a breast joke since the 5th Episode. It's been too long, too long *sniff*. Miki compliments Onoda too, and he gets really nervous like a good otaku should. Imaizumi and Naruko are still riding that train that they're not close, yet they're joined at the hip. Keep denying it, guys. Give the fujoshi some inspiration.

Their last period of the day is English, and their lecturer is Coach Pierre! Well, it's Mr. Pierre while they're sitting at their desks. Now we have his circumstances revealed, about some random gaijin hanging around a high school cycling team. That only took 19 episodes, but the payoff from the 1st-years' surprise was gold. He promptly tells them it's too nice of a Saturday to sit around; it's time to get on your bikes! Onoda lingers, because he's unsure if he made the inter-high team or not. Kinjou, back at training camp, had a conversation with him, and he was in the middle of rattling off all of Onoda's weak points, and then he got called away. You can't leave a socially inept otaku hanging like that.

It's up to Coach Pierre to finish the conversation. He tells Onoda, a safe strong team can get Kinjou on the podium, but to win, they need to be unpredictable. The course conditions themselves on race day are unpredictable enough, which is why you need a strong team, but if you have your own unpredictability, you can unleash that on the other teams. Onoda has already surprised Kinjou 3 times, by winning the mountain sprint at the Welcome Race, finishing 1,000 kilometers, and beating the 2nd-years in their sprint at the end of the 3rd night of training camp. With his climbing and fast-cadence chase, he can be their wildcard. Onoda's uncertainty evaporates, and he puts on the Sohoku team kit for their first training ride.

Unfortunately, socially inept otaku feelings quickly hit the backswing of the pendulum, and Onoda begins to feel the weight of his responsibilities for the team. Imaizumi is happy he can shift again, Naruko is happy he can get low in the drops again, but Onoda is not moving faster now that he has his regular light wheels again. The team jersey is weighing him down. The rest of the team makes it up to the top of their local climb way before Onoda does, and when they finally see him approaching, he looks totally bonked and about to crash in big gulley on the side of the road. Kinjou acts swiftly, pulls a radical maneuver employing countersteer and a pivot slide, and catches Onoda.

Kinjou tells Onoda how Team Sohoku works: if you fall, I'll catch you; but if I fall, you catch me. Road racing is a team sport, so you don't have to do it all by yourself. What you have to do is support your teammates with all your might, and they'll do the same for each other. This jibes well with Onoda's goal to ride with his friends, but now he's added riding for his friends too. Onoda, fight-o! And we end the episode with an embarrassing team huddle in a rest stop. Hot-blooded morale building, whether you like it or not!
