Naruto Shippuuden - Episode 351
Kakashi Shippuuden continues. Sarutobi and Kakashi set a trap for Danzo. Danzo and Orochimaru adjust their plans.
Kakashi knows there's something wrong about the wood style using child he saw at Danzo's Foundation headquarters, and sneaks into the Hokage's secret library to research the unique jutsu of the 1st Hokage, Hashirama Senjuu. The records lead to a secret program to artificially recreate the wood style jutsu, but they are missing. Dramatically, the 3rd Hokage tosses the report to Kakashi, and tells him to read it. The wood style jutsu research is deemed necessary to pursue because only it, and the Uchiha's Sharingan can control the 9-tailed beast. To clarify, only a Sharingan user can summon the 9-tailed Fox while it is free of a Jinchuuriki, and only the wood style jutsu can suppress it. The research was supposed to be abandoned because none of the candidates could survive the experiments. Kakashi knows there's at least one who did. Sarutobi tells him, if any of the kidnapped infants survived the experimentation, they would be about 10 years old now. Which leads to the trap Kakashi sets for Danzo.
Sarutobi may have been chosen to replace the late 4th Hokage, but he still needs the approval of the feudal lord. Danzo had convinced Kakashi to steal the plans for the route the 3rd Hokage would take to travel to the feudal lord's palace, but with his loyalty restored to Sarutobi, Kakashi lays a trap instead. He overpowers the wood style user, but lets him live, telling him that his talent would be necessary to protect the village someday. Back at the Hokage's office, Danzo is celebrating a little too early by trying to get used to the Hokage's chair, but Sarutobi walks in, letting him know of his plan's failure. He also lets Danzo live, instead of being put to death as a traitor, by extracting an oath to protect the village with all of his might.
Danzo immediately pays a visit to Orochimaru letting him know that all of his secret work might be compromised. Obviously the 3rd Hokage, known as the Professor and a man of peace, is still an order of magnitude better at being a sneaky ninja and playing the political subterfuge game than Danzo could ever be. Meanwhile, Kakashi still struggles with his guilt over Rin's death, and with betraying Danzo, is even more on edge that he was before, even to the point of drawing a blade on Guy. The wood style user has also drawn an interest in Kakashi, possibly following him around on Danzo's orders, so Kakashi's edginess is well-placed.
One thing I'm unsure of with this filler arc is whether they'll explain why Kakashi had to kill Rin. The manga fans know why, but that part of the story is several weeks away from being told in the main story with Naruto and Obito. The circumstances of that scene has a large impact on Obito when it is revealed, so I'm not sure the producers want to blunt that impact on the audience. Well, filler is filler, so maybe Kakashi can stop playing Macbeth scenes in his little apartment without explaining the events leading up to Rin's death. It might be something as lame as him finally remembering what Rin said after he pierced her chest.
