Kantai Collection - Episode 6



The stakes are high for the annual curry cooking contest. The winner's recipe is served in the mess hall and Nagato has to judge the winner.

Heh.

I will never understand the fascination anime and manga culture have with curry, but it's a thing, so for a show that's entirely fanservice for Kantai Collection game enthusiasts, we have a curry cooking fanservice episode.

 

Our three main girls are barely in it, so our "ppoi" count was very low.

 

Bauxite is the ore that is refined into aluminum. Akagi the aircraft carrier seems to have a hankering for the mineral. She's hungry for anything she can absorb.

 

Instead of bubble wrap, Akagi messed around with one of those wire puzzles where you have to separate the pieces. She spends a lot of time in the healing bath.

 

The sixth destroyer group girls don't do a lot of fighting, but they do bring back the goods. Like special bauxite. Akagi is pleased.



 

 

Takao and Atago know how to make an entrance. Well, at least Atago does.

 



 

 

I guess it's fun to say "pan-pa-ka-pan!" Na no desu... I thought I had fallen into an episode of Tamayura for a second there.

 

Yes, the heroes of the episode are the Sixth Destroyer Group girls.

 



 

 

They all have their quirks, naturally, like wanting to be a lady, saying na no desu, adding in Russian phrases, or always trying to be in charge. Sometimes that doesn't mix very well in times of adversity, such as blasting your stew with a flame thrower.

 



 

 

The whole bauxite thing turned out to be a waste of time, but at least the girls got a nice cooking pot out of it.

 

Everything always comes down to sports day festivals. Fine. Naka-chan knows how to start us off.

 



 

 

The main source of drama for the contest is that the prize of the contest means the curry recipe will be served in the mess hall for the next year. The girls attach all sorts of motivations to winning, like catching the eye of the admiral, proving they're ladies, becoming a flagship, or getting marriage material credibility. Ashigara is the teacher starting to feel her biological clock ticking.

 



 

How mean! Her fleet sister is the one everyone wants to marry, but Ashigara is the one everybody wants to see get married, presumably so they don't have to hear her complain about her bad dates, unsuccessful mixers, or watch her drown her sorrows anymore.

 

Ashigara may be a good cook, but her curry recipe is very spicy. This is a problem for Nagato. She was hoping at least one other curry recipe would come to the judging table so she wouldn't have to eat spicy curry for a whole year. Thankfully the Sixth Destroyer Group girls didn't knock themselves out.



 

Besides eating all their ingredients, their own stew, getting sick from their bad food, the carrier girls from the 5th fleet took themselves out over Shoukaku's fancy underwear. Down for the count!

 



 

 

Kongou may have lots of confidence, but apparently it doesn't extend to her sister ship's choice of stew ingredients. She always has to fire something, even if it's just assertions in a conversation.

 



 

 

Oh man, nobody likes to see a lady of a certain age be truthful over her romantic prospects.

 

 

In the end, Nagato had to taste some spicy food, even though she is weak against it, just to accept some less spicy but acceptable curry for the cafeteria.

 

This was just a fun episode where we saw more of the other fleet girls. Pure cute girls doing cute things. Overall plot advanced? Nope. Character development? Nope. Characterization? Yes. Good enough for a fun episode.
