The fleet girls begin their major operation but many things don't go as planned.

Heh.

The big operation is about to start, but that doesn't mean the cute girls can't do their final preparations cutely.

 

Kitakami and Ooi aren't going to be in the same squadron? That can't be good.

 

I don't understand this cliché. Why do young flat-chested girls hate milk so much? Is it the high incidence rate of lactose intolerance in Asian countries? Even knowing Atago and Takao love their milk, it's not enough to goad Ikazuchi into drinking her own.

There. That should do it. It'll take a few more mugs than that for Fubuki to catch up to Yuudachi in the "style" department.

I hope Shimakaze followed her orders and didn't have to be chased around the island before launching.

 

Akagi was the main focus of the episode, so she gets the eye catch.

Things started getting serious as the fleet girls started their naval operation, but then we saw this scene mixed in with the other ones showing their preparations.

Who is this? Why are they hiding her dress and face?

 

Nagato had designed a secondary operation, but those girls had a set of orders that weren't supposed to be opened until they were well underway. I hope this bodes well for all the bad things that happened to Akagi's operation.

 

Yamato was supposed to join Carrier Group 1, but she didn't show up at the rendezvous point. At least she had her grand naval launching sequence.

Yuudachi had no time for "poi" in trying to repel the torpedo bombers from their rear flank.

Okay, I get the personification of a boat, but they made a whole airport into a girl.

Is it okay to make "landing strip" jokes?

 

Aw. Nagato showed her vulnerable side to Mutsu.

Hmm.

Akagi had a violent and desperate dream and it was quite a surprise to see the actual aircraft carrier Akagi listing as it was about to be sunk. This image tied in rather nicely with Akagi questioning her feelings of inescapable fate and trying to avoid those circumstances. She addressed the question head-on - what are fleet girls? What does it mean to be the soul of an old Japanese Navy ship when you already know how it was destroyed?

 

Unfortunately for Akagi, trying to avoid her fate made her choose many wrong paths to complete her mission. She made a big deal of the admiral ordering her to choose her escort, yet she didn't take Fubuki with her for the assault on the Abyssal airfield. What was the point of all the anti-aircraft training last episode if Fubuki wasn't there to use it?

 

Not only that, Akagi didn't seem to be very tactically cautious either. There's an airfield taking heavy damage, yet her naval escorts aren't around. Obviously, Akagi's carrier group should have been looking out for a flanking maneuver. Somebody's recon launcher was broken, so the squadron as a whole should have been more careful. Akagi's desperate attempts to avoid her nightmare plunged her into exactly the circumstances she saw. Quite the nihilistic view of fate, at least what we've seen before the cliffhanger.

 

Things I'm looking forward to next episode is finding out who the mystery girl is, what those secret orders for the secondary operation, and what happened to the admiral. This show doesn't have a lot of time left to answer those questions and still give us some fanservice, so I hope the battle wraps quickly next time. Seeing all these cute girls getting hurt is no fun.
