Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou - Episode 8
Usa starts his job at the Apprentice Cafe. An old friend with a new look is caught between worlds. The Kawai Manor girls enter battle mode to save Usa.
Heh.
The title of this episode is a portmanteau of the two Japanese words for happy and death. Kind of like the German Schadenfreude, this word or concept means someone is happy even though they may be dying. That seems to cover most of the situations Usa finds himself in when he deals with Ritsu. So many terrible things happen before he gets that one little smile, or look, or cute action from Ritsu.Apparently that Mori Summer from Chuunibyou gets around...
Otaku are everywhere, even when they're geeking out over historical references.
Usa's old friend trying to impress her new friends, and all the interactions between her and her old friends was very realistic. That stress of not being found out, but being so insecure you go with the flow of the obnoxious guy, who is also insecure with trying to look cool in front of girls by insulting wait-staff, was all done very well.
That obnoxious guy character is almost an archetype in teen coming-of-age movies, so seeing him get taken down a peg by the Kawai Manor girls in full battle mode was very satisfying.
Speaking of battle mode:
Mayumi and Sayaka decided to go with their tactical weapons of mass destruction on the first strike. Instant death on the guys, and full-on transference of loyalty to Usa for the girls. With how Usa was just sitting their taking the customers' abuse because he didn't want to embarrass his old weirdo friend, it looked like Mayumi and Sayaka were going to go the violent route. But with Ritsu forging the path of sexual domination, they followed the better battle plan.
Sayaka plays dirty! Throwing that fake eyelash on the floor was a genius move, but we've seen how she manipulates guys, so I was a little impressed that she had tricks to take out girls too. She must use those ploys in manipulating guys' emotions to follow her. Still, it's unfair to go full-out on a high school girl, even if she was hurting Usa's feelings.
Geh.
Mayumi is mai waifu. That is all. With how assertive Mayumi is, why is she still getting sad about missing these group dates with her younger coworkers? Shiro can't be the only eligible guy she knows outside of the office.
Hmm.
With all the makeup jokes Mayumi and Shiro make about Sayaka, it only makes sense she knows all the artificial tricks Usa's weirdo friend used to alter her appearance. Those two, Sumiko, and Ritsu must have seen Sayaka without her makeup already, so when do we get an episode where Usa happens upon her, and gives us the old "Who's that?" joke?Ritsu and Usa keep making little steps toward each other, so it's fun to see an episode showing that progression. Plus, Usa is learning her weak spots. He just needs the confidence to use that knowledge in being a little pushy in a way she likes.
Well, we've seen one of Usa's weirdos, so I wonder how long it will be before we see the mad scientist or the dude with a demonic portal in his leg. Or maybe it's time for another of Mayumi's worthless ex-boyfriends to show up again. Whatever happens, I'm already looking forward to another visit to the Kawai Boarding House.
