Yowamushi Pedal - Grande Road - Episode 19

The select group of contenders becomes five. Imaizumi shows Midousuji how much he as grown.

Heh.

Ahahahaha! How do you like that nickname Midousuji? Kimousuji (Gross-usji)! Ahahahaha! He didn't like that at all! I noticed that he couldn't call Imaizumi Yowaizumi (Weak-aizumi) anymore. That kind of trash talk couldn't exactly work on the leader of the whole race with only 5 kms to go.

Everybody has to call Onoda by his first name now. It's like an after-school confession to your crush! Fujoshi swoon!

Speaking of fujoshi swoon, I don't think Onoda liked the kind of smile Manami was flashing at him.

Where's the lazy smile of the school prince? Scary!

Well, Midousuji has reclaimed all the weird gross mannerisms that made him such an effective villain before Onoda neutered him with a nighttime ride.

Wait, you still want to see something to make the fujoshi swoon? Fine.

Midousuji won't go for the bait, but Onoda is a nice guy and won't leave anyone hanging. If you put your hand up to the screen, you can almost imagine that Manami is holding your hand. I mean, you could try it yourself. It's not like I did it. I don't even know why I mentioned this...

We had a nice reunion with Imaizumi and Onoda. Again, we get someone else to brag for Onoda since he won't do it himself, or even reminisce about his own achievements.

Listen to Manami's assessment of Onoda, Fukutomi. Onoda is a threat. He's just the main character, after all.

Onoda may have found the one thing he's good at on the bike - the pursuit. Even if he crashes, falls behind, or gets passed, he'll keep coming back, pedaling faster.

Hmm.

Imaizumi explained to Onoda the race situation for a mountaintop finish. It's every man for himself. The spoiling tactics can still work, to some degree, but they're only 5 km out from the line. It's too much of a risk to lower your speed when you're already near your personal redline and then try to cover an attack. If there's an opportunity to break away from the group, Onoda or Imaizumi will have to take it and leave the other behind. Hopefully that guy can help create a bigger gap with some blocking, but that will mean his race for the win is over.

Well, if Onoda gets left behind first, I'm sure he'll use his pursuit power if has to. We need to have some drama and tension before the winner crosses the line. Remember, this is sports anime.

Cycling Porn.

This week, we've got Imaizumi looking smooth on his Scott, Onoda sacrificing his future children by jumping on his saddle from a dead run, the climbers' bikes all together, Fukutomi showing how to have eyes in the back of your head, and Imaizumi giving back some shoulder action to Midousuji.

Sparks with the quick clip-ins by Onoda? I can deal with that. The sparking from gear changes still makes me grumble. Also, cyclocross guys practice jumping on the saddle so they don't, ah, stun themselves when they remount after crossing an obstacle. They basically pick a side of their butt they don't mind bruising and aim for that, and then they slide towards the middle of their seats. Hey, bike racing is tough. The pros are basically circus acrobats, tight funny clothing included, while they pound their legs into oblivion for six hours.

We saw Midousuji try that shoulder nudging on Imaizumi during the first day, and it totally knocked him off his rhythm. Now, like Fukutomi feared, he has developed into a monster, where he can make Gross-uji take a backseat with a well-timed verbal jab, and he can give as good as he gets with physical jostling. Still, Midousuji shouldn't be doing that on a climb so far out from the finish. Pros get time penalties and point relegations for that kind of stuff.
