Junketsu no Maria - Episode 7

Maria attempts to stop a major battle but chaos ensues, leaving her with injuries.

Heh.

War is chaos. Even when you give people reasonable choices, they don't have to take them.

Ezekiel may be Michael's spear, but she still has Free Will. I thought angels weren't supposed to have Free Will.

Ezekiel told Joseph that she committed a sin by not following Michael's order. The purest essence of Sin is a separation from God, so here she is admitting that she has created a rift between herself and Michael.

Galfa, who has run away from his past, was originally a Moor, according to Yvain. Maybe Galfa didn't just kill him to keep his money and not take the blame for disobeying the Count's orders, but also to protect his secret that he was a Muslim.

Interesting that the limb Galfa lost was the one he faked being injured to win his duel against the nobleman. The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away, huh?

Edwina claimed she didn't like the hen party at her house, but she did like all the compliments from Maria.

The witches are all about short skirts and hot pants. Very fashion forward.

I don't know how Artemis would do in a fight, since her skills lie in more, ah, gentle matters, but she knows what to aim for and when.

I think Viv was worried about Artemis' offensive power too, so she made a flashy entrance.

The way these medieval battles play out is more like armed robbery than warfare.

Joseph got a quick lesson in how Mercy looks futile, since he saw the Englishman he spared killed right in front of him seconds later, but Mercy isn't for the benefit of the recipient. If Joseph can keep showing Mercy even after that, his Soul will increasingly grow toward God.

Hmm.

I'm glad that all the ugliness of the chaotic battle was only in half the episode so that the audience could make sense of what happened. Alliances definitely shifted. The other witches got a chance to hear from Maria why she was disrupting their gravy train, and like Viv said, Maria got to hear how her actions are perceived by others. The major points of the conversation were covered in the tag line for the show - she's a strong witch and she's a virgin who does what she wants.

I saw the main theme of the episode as forgiveness. Everyone forgave Ezekiel quickly, because they knew it wasn't her choice to turn into Michael's spear and they saw that she tried her best not to kill Maria. We now know what it looks like when Ezekiel sees Maria using flashy magic - instant spear action! It didn't look like it, but Michael forgave her too. If he didn't, she would have been banished, but she was just told not to question next time. With God, there's always a next time. Well, in Catholicism there's one sin where there isn't a next time, but you really have to try to make that one stick.

The catharsis came when Ezekiel accepted Maria's forgiveness. The Sacrament of Reconciliation isn't a one-way street. Not only does the sinner have to be truly sorry for his sin, but he has to accept God's forgiveness. In all the Sacraments, there is that element of Faith, otherwise what's the point? That doesn't mean he can't still feel bad about what he did, but since Faith is also an active daily struggle, part of feeling that guilt is actively trying to believe in God's mercy. He knows what you did, you just have to accept that He's already forgiven you. If you're a good person, that's a pretty tough thing to do sometimes.

Maria screwed a whole bunch of things over in trying to stop the battle which was going pretty well for the French. She may have prevented Ann's father from getting killed, but it looks like another life was taken in his stead. At least that's what it looks like from the cliffhanger. Poor Martha. We already know this show doesn't shy away from showing the ugliness of life, but we'll have to wait until next episode for confirmation. Plus, Bernard has some dark plans for Maria that involves Galfa. He may blame Maria for all his misfortune, but it was the accumulation of all his petty desires that left him on a surgeon's table. We'll have to see what happens when a monk uses a secret Moor to eliminate a virgin witch's interference.
