Episode 4 — “Nighttime Calls Are Super Ticklish”
Hmm.
Hokkaido Gals featured the part of Minami’s personality that started the story of a Tokyo transplant befriending cold weather gyaru: her need to be friends with everyone. She wouldn’t have been so clingy with a strange boy as she waited for the bus in the first episode. And Minami wouldn’t’ have been trying so hard to befriend Sayuri. The catalyst for all the developing friendships so far has been Minami’s desire for friends to include her in every fun thing. Tsubasa has been the audience’s vehicle to witness these new connections form. Of course, if Minami’s neediness is too much, we could see it turn darker toward jealousy. I do not want my fluffy oyakodon fantasy to become a mother-daughter cuckoldry NTR fetish doujin!
The gyaru friendship with a less-experienced boy has one tendency we’ve seen in other gyaru comedies — the gal’s flirty efforts to evoke a reaction from the pure, pure boy backfires, turning the tables on the blushing gyaru. That was the formula in Don’t Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro” and My Dress-Up Darling, where Marin Kitagawa suffered setbacks, too. Hokkaido Gals manufactured a running joke for Tsubasa’s inner thoughts complimenting beautiful gals (and MILF gyarus), which made for endearing punchlines. That Tokyo boy can even inadvertently charm Mama Fuyuki! Minami should declare her intentions openly before other gyarus, like Sayuri, fall prey to Tsubasa’s accidental pickup game.
Hokkaido Gals had more cultural education for us. The natives could be accustomed to the cold but aren’t stupid. Schools and businesses don’t shut down in the middle of a snowstorm. However, nobody walks to school in a blizzard. The spread-out geography of Hokkaido means most people own and use cars, so they’ll use them to get their kids to school. Even so, the kids still need to bring blankets. And heating pads for the fashion-conscious gyaru, Minami.
Heh.
How many days has Tsubasa been in Hokkaido already? The ski trip in last week’s Hokkaido Gals was only yesterday, explaining why he’s so sore. Natives go to school in a blizzard, so suck it up, Shounen! Do “true citizens” here really walk to school in snowstorms? I don’t see any other idiots walking in the snow. Hahaha! Kitami residents use cars, Tokyo boy! That’s not Minami flashing before Tsubasa’s eyes because she’s leaning out a car window.
Yay! Gyaru Mama in Hokkaido Gals! Minami is the younger version of her mother. Do they have gyaru cloning tanks in Hokkaido? We haven’t seen Minami’s father yet, but Mrs. Fuyuki does not have the daughters’ ahoge (hair tuft). Mama Fuyuki is a hoot! She flirts with Tsubasa to tease Minami. Please, no rough play today because Tsubasa is sore from yesterday. Tender boys need a break from Minami’s strenuous loving. Haha! Mrs. Fuyuki loves double entendres, too. I love it! Mama teasing means fixing up her daughter with “the rich boy in the castle.” Careful. Minami resorts to violent threats.
Tokyo would have canceled school with a snowstorm like this, but not Hokkaido. But the residents wouldn’t walk to school! Do you remember how the Fuyuki house has a heated floor (from Hokkaido Gals, Episode 1)? Minami chooses fashion over comfort. Har. Mrs. Fuyuki warns that dressing for the winter is expensive, so “your wallet might freeze to death first.” Money keeps wallets fat and warm, according to Hokkaido. Uh oh. Here’s where the “pure, pure boy” says something out loud that draws all the gyaru to his yard. Tsubasa made them both blush! Oho. Mama Fuyuki recognizes gyaru pickup skills when she sees them. Good job, Minami!
Ahahaha! Minami loves Sayuri, but the reserved gyaru is not touchy-feely. Oh. Sayuri is sore from skiing, like Tsubasa. Aw. Minami feels left out from bonding over muscle soreness. Minami wants sore muscles, too! Tsubasa is slowly acclimatizing to Hokkaido. He doesn’t have to borrow Minami’s blanket anymore because he brought his own. But Minami has another secret to staying warm as a Hokkaido gal — she wears warming pads in strategic places! Tsubasa is learning a lot, even how to use the local Hokkaido gals’ dialect. Minami is so proud!
Ah. Sayuri has language suggestions. She claims Minami uses more Hokkaido slang than other natives. Minami is exceptional in many ways! How can we tell the gyaru slang apart from the local flavor? Sayuri presents herself as an example who doesn’t use as much slang or is a winter bunny like the “exceptional” Hokkaido gal, Minami. Aw. Sayuri wants to play video games with Tsubasa, but she can’t stop her tsundere-type blushing. Phrasing, Tsubasa, phrasing! Minami will make Sayuri her friend. Oh, yes. She can’t escape!
Let’s go to a Hokkaido mall with Hokkaido gals. The most prominent difference between malls in Tokyo and Hokkaido is how things are further apart. Well. Tokyo spread things out vertically instead of horizontally. Still, the mall is more laid back than a bustling urban shopping center. Professor Sayuri shows Minami how to clear a game level. Yes. It’s time for Girl Talk. Or Gal Talk? Sayuri may be a gaming professor, but she still needs gyaru decorations, like makeup, colored contact lenses, and nail polish. Aw. They’re bonding over gyaru stuff. Ha! Sayuri says blunt, embarrassing things like Tsubasa. Minami’s heart can’t take it! Let’s end a mall shopping trip in the usual anime manner now: photo booth stickers. Tsubasa in a gyaru sandwich — lucky boy! Ha. I see the anime title again, なまらめんこい (namara menkoi — super adorable).
Look. Anime kids do their homework. If you do your homework, you can get a gyaru Face Timing from her bathtub, too. I have never heard of a “half bath” (半湯浴み, han yuami). Minami used these words, soaking below the chest instead of up to the shoulders, to freak him out that she would be topless when she started a video call. Uh oh. Tsubasa’s replies are too formal a reaction for Minami. Ratchet up the fanservice! Video call! He can’t hide behind his thumbs now. Tsubasa’s yelps are more like it.
What a fun and sexy way for Hokkaido Gals to dispel misconceptions about Hokkaido winters. Most natives only take showers instead of the hot soaks Minami teased Tsubasa with. Heating bills would be too much otherwise, so they can’t soak daily. Ooh. Minami says Kitami has several hot spring inns, so let’s hope we have an onsen episode! Uh oh. She just learned she didn’t do her English homework. Ah. Here’s how Minami’s teasing backfires on her. She thought she flashed everything at Tsubasa! She tried too much. Aw. I wanted to see Mama Fuyuki in the bath. And Minami was late with her English homework.
