Episode 9 — “Reunion, Coco, Lick”
Hmm.
One of the most effective rules for storytelling is the mantra: “Show. Don’t tell.” That reminds writers to use language to form images in readers’ minds. Adjectives and adverbs of scale pale in comparison to painting a picture instead. Contrast an example of characters craning their necks to look at the top of a mansion to characters standing around saying, “It was a big house.” Did you feel the impulse to move your head and neck? Show. Don’t tell. This Chained Soldier episode successfully followed that advice when Yuuki found himself in a humanoid demon village.
Aoba Wakura and her friends, Koko Zenibako and Naon Yuno, don’t act like the other demons with the names of gods and dragons. Would those characters sit around washing clothes and waving to strangers? In an earlier episode, the dragon lady demon chastised the snake lady for playing with the humans’ collected gadgets. We are seeing a separate faction of demonesses who are still Japanese people. How did this happen? Why do some of the specialized Shuuki follow them? We’re suddenly curious about what happened to Aoba after she disappeared into the Mato. But for sure, we know that these Japanese demon hybrids hate the Demon Defense Forces.
Did the military girls have trouble distinguishing between demon groups when they established their bases in the Mato? There’s still the odd timing of how talking demons are recent developments coinciding with Yuuki’s partnership with Kyouka. This is how Chained Soldier creates valuable imagery for viewers. We need to see what happens next for answers to our questions. When you show your audience a story, it wants more!
Heh.
Action! Chains! Thigh boots! Kyouka and Yuuki’s teamwork has improved. Yuuki will wear a collar and kill Shuuki for Kyouka’s head pats. He is such a boy because he wants to protect women. No kinky reward this time. Unless you count a princess-carry and a rewarding kiss. The hero claims his prize!
Hah. Tenka drops by the Squad 6 dormitory whenever she wants. More head pats! Yuuki recounts how his big sister taught him how to fight with wrestling moves. His colleagues now know he works best for approval from big-sister types. Tenka flirts so hard, and the other girls don’t like it. Not one bit! Uh oh! Nei’s security alarm went off.
It’s a trap! We last saw Coco in Chained Soldier’s second episode, licking Aoba to heal her wounds. Ooh. Coco has a unique Shuuki of her own. Aoba rides Unihorn. Aha. Coco is a little bit dumb. Himari knew her name because the imouto-type demon refers to herself in the third person. Himari told her that the Supreme Commander of the Demon Defense Forces wanted to talk with her. And negotiations have broken down already.
Yuuki is getting buff. Emergency! Nei’s pure eyes need protection. Oh, and Shushu and Himari need help. Coco calls her pet Shuuki, “Kuma.” It does look like a bear. Himari has more than a belt-fed machine gun in her arsenal, though. Shushu needs to swat bugs away to help Himari. Ack! That one looks like a bug! And it has a spear? Oh! It’s the pet Shuuki for the other talking demon with Aoba. They’re all here! Aoba meets Yuuki again. Whoa! Aoba’s voice supersedes Kyouka’s commands. So far, this is the best proof she’s his big sister. Nice. Aoba’s group ran this operation to abduct Yuuki! Aoba and her friends look so Japanese in the second eye catch.
How many years has it been since Aoba disappeared in a Mato Mishap? What a way to wake up. Licky, licky, licky! Aw. Coco is just helping a friend’s little brother. Um. Chained Soldier? I have questions about that gray leotard Aoba, Coco, and the other one wears. Like, is it a piece of clothing or their demon skin? It’s a good thing Yuuki didn’t receive scratches on his pee-pee. Yes? Foot-licking, toe-sucking fetish: check. Indeed, Yuuki, the enemy is assaulting you. Sexually! Uh oh. Aoba does not like this scene. At all! Aw. Coco has been through Aoba’s wrestling overreactions before. Yuuki was naked before and after his transformation. Now everything’s okay because Aoba’s moods resemble northeastern weather — fickle. Yuuki is confident that Aoba is the same girl he used to know.
The demon girls’ hidden village is effective against Nei’s sensing abilities. Kyouka is mad that Yuuki obeyed someone else’s orders. Mysteries abound in Chained Soldier. Oh! Yuuki has returned to his human form, so Kyouka has to pay his reward! Her body will lead her right to him. Can the demon girls offer an explanation? Put that aside for now because Yuuki has grown into a handsome stud! Quite the enthusiastic agreement that Yuuki is now an “ikemen.” Even Naon and Coco can bond with Yuuki over how overbearing Aoba can be.

Uh oh. Yuuki is hungry, but he shouldn’t sample random demon mushrooms. Psychedelic! I’d look at Naon’s beautiful figure, too, but I’m staring at her to figure out how her tiny crotch covering works. Mushrooms and meat buns sound like a good pairing. Hahaha! How did Coco’s “buns” get mixed up in this scene? Kyouka, the living, breathing Yuuki Detection Radar, is ready to roll out. I see clues in Chained Soldier about how the demon girl village differs from the Mato Defense Forces and the other psychically-powered girls in the human world. These girls ate pure Mato Peaches in the Mato.
Squad 6 and Tenka join the sortie to rescue Yuuki. The banter between all these women in the hidden village will be hilarious. I can’t wait! Nei-sensei gives us a snapshot of the Mato Defense Force in her omake. We might see more nuance in the next episode! Naon is the featured player. Nice!
