Emilia and Subaru exited the temple to find the strongest obstacle in their way of freeing their villagers from the Sanctuary still standing. Emilia wanted to show Garfiel a thing or two, but Subaru said it was his job. In his usual sneaky and timely way, Subaru robbed Garfiel of his transforming ability, shocked him by taking a punch, and used that opening to use a new power to finish him off. Disturbingly, Subaru has one of those creepy hands of the Witches' Cult at his disposal. But he also has a devoted and vengeful Land Dragon in Patrasche to take the actual finishing blow on Garfiel. Subaru has the best timing, don't you know?
Part of convincing Garfiel to let the Sanctuary wall fall was to force him to confront his past and his feelings of abandonment of his mother. The Trial showed him what he didn't want to admit because it was more painful – his mother loved him, didn't abandon him and Frederica, and planned on reuniting them with their father. Garfiel is convinced that his mother died in landslide near the Sanctuary village, but there's plenty of uncertainty for Frederica and Garfiel to find their father to discover the truth of their mother's journey.
All of that was prelude to a newly confident Emilia to face the trials again with her memories intact before encountering them. If you saw the movie with how Puck and Emilia met, this would make much more sense of how breaking his contract with her released her memories. This new Emilia has sass enough to jab back at Echidna and she used the patented Natsuki Subaru pose of introducing herself as the daughter of a fellow witch. Emilia might be too much for Subaru to handle after this!
