Nielson Powless, a 24 year old American on Team EF Education First, did some off-road work as his group descended from the Porte de Bales to the Col de Peyresourde. It's his first Tour de France, and the sharp right turn he expected was more of a zig-zag.
“[On the Porte de Bales descent] we were trying to gain as much time as we could on Nans Peters and Ilnur Zakarin, I just misjudged the speed that I was going at and how tight that turn was. It was a bit tighter than I was expecting. I thought was a 90 degree, not an almost 180. Luckily I was able to keep it upright and get back on the road but I was a bit of a scary moment.”
The Col de Peyresourde was the first Pyrenean climb on the Tour's first stage in the the Pyrenees in 1910. It’s the 68th time the Tour de France has gone over the Peyresourde.
