Because Rohan Dennis won the opening time trial and he was under 25 years of age, that meant that he owned the yellow jersey, the green jersey and the white jersey. No polka dot jersey can be awarded until Stage 3 when the Tour encounters the first categorized climb. Since one man can't wear more than one jersey, the others get "loaned" to the riders closest to him in each of the categories. Tony Martin wore green as the 2nd place finisher yesterday and Tom Dumoulin wore the white jersey. Left out of the jersey lending program was Fabian Cancellara who was third on the day. He corrected that situation by the end of today's stage.
Bonus seconds are back in the Tour and the leader Rohan Dennis was caught out in a split due to crosswinds, which meant Tony Martin would be the overall leader, as long as Cancellara didn't gap him by more than a second or he didn't finish on the podium to gather up any bonus seconds. With Andre Greipel, Peter Sagan and his own teammate Mark Cavendish contesting the sprint, that seemed to be a foregone conclusion. Unfortunately, Cancellara pipped Cavendish for third after he sat up when he knew he wasn't going to win the stage. A four second time bonus put Fabian Cancellara clear of Tony Martin and took away his yellow jersey.
