Notes: Saturday was the Solvang Century, which was 100 miles around the Santa Ynez Valley, starting and ending in Solvang. The weather was great; sunny, clear, crisp air; perfect cycling conditions, except for one thing: constant 10 to 20 mile an hour wind. Our group joked at the 3rd SAG stop, that no matter which way we turned on the road, we never got a tailwind, so it was as if an angry, little wind god was following us around. We had images of a grey cloud with its cheeks puffed up as it blew, like the storm god in a Piers Anthony Xanth novel. Luckily, on the big 18 mile climb of the day, we finally got that tailwind. So, if the last time I did the Solvang Century was "Snowvang," this year was definitely "Windvang." But it was a great day, our group was very prepared physically, and if not for my flat tire with three miles to go, we all would have finished within 10 minutes of each other. A very successful outing, with no injuries, all finishers, and fun stories to tell around the dinner table after the ride.
