Episode 44 — "Dogs Hunt Dogs"
Hmm.
Bungou Stray Dogs presents the part of a shounen story I hate the most. Our favorite characters must find themselves in the worst situation by the worst villains. Look at how scary these opponents are with their intricate and overpowering techniques! How can the people whose skills we know the best handle these impossible things? The details don't matter at this point. The good guys will end up at a low point. The villains will think they have a checkmate. The only surprise is when the momentum shifts back to our heroes. Two subjects will hold my attention during this phase of hero torture: Where is Dazai? The subplot will be Ranpo and Fukuzawa. I hope the fights in Bungou Stray Dogs are colorfully flashy and the Port Mafia characters' entrances are emotionally satisfying. But let's meet the literary villains of the Hunting Dogs.
- Ouchi Fukichi — He's the commander of the Hunting Dogs who attempted to recruit Fukuzawa to his team. The real-life Ouchi Fukuchi was a literary critic for the Tokyo Nichi Nichi Shimbun newspaper in the 1870s. But that was a pseudonym for Gennichirou Fukuchi, who founded a short-lived conservative party in support of the emperor and a constitutional monarchy in the Meiji Era. His Gift, Mirror Lion, comes from Fukuchi's kabuki screenplay, The Mirror Lion, A Spring Diversion.
- Tecchou Suehiro — His Gift, Plum Blossoms in Snow, makes his sword blade any length he wishes. The real-life Suehiro was a politician and novelist who opposed the right of the free press against criticisms of the emperor. His novel (Plum Blossoms in the Snow, 1886) tells a love story about a samurai's daughter searching for her arranged fiancé who went missing during the tumult of the Meiji Era.
- Saigiku Jouno — His Gift, Priceless Tears, allows the Bungou Stray Dogs version to disintegrate his body into particles and move through small spaces. He has heightened senses that compensate for his blindness. He is also an expert at interrogation and investigation. The real-life Saigiku Jouno was a playwright, journalist, businessman, writer, and theater critic from the late Edo period to the mid-Meiji period. He published books and adaptations of Western novels. The name of his Gift comes from the novel Priceless Tears.
- Teruko Oukura — She is the vice-captain of the Hunting Dogs. Her Gift, Gasp of the Soul, manipulates the age of anyone she touches, which she uses for interrogation and torture. She can also use it on herself to disguise or enhance her body. The real-life Teruko Oukura was a Japanese mystery novelist of the Shouwa era, often claimed as the first Japanese female mystery novelist. She was also a student of Natsume Souseki. Edogawa Ranpo nicknamed her the Japanese Agatha Christie. The Bungou Stray Dogs Gift namesake comes from "Gasp of the Soul," a short story in one of her mystery collections.
Heh.
Ranpo knows he's in a trap. He suspects the missing page from the Book is changing reality and his memories. The Armed Detective Agency is in trouble. Kunikida and his four-person squad must escape the military. Their teamwork and ingenuity are perfect, but they'll need more than that to evade the Hunting Dogs. There are five Hunting Dogs, but only four have arrived. The fifth is undercover somewhere.
The military police also arrested Fukuzawa. We miss what happened to Ranpo or where Dazai is. Atsushi still has his foot stuck in cement. Drama! Kenji lifts his team's spirit with a lesson from farm life: Replant an orchard after a storm. Stop bothering me with the details. Let's get to fighting with the Hunting Dogs! They are as quirky as the characters in the Armed Detective Agency.
Congratulations on having vehicle theft insurance! You will need it! Jouno is a beast. Bungou Stray Dogs puts on a back-and-forth battle between Gift Users. Kyouka arrived at Atsushi's location through their phones. The tide turns now! Enter Chuuya and the Port Mafia! Gee, I wonder who Fukuzawa was talking to on the phone. Also, I question which group the fifth member of the Hunting Dogs infiltrated.
