BREAK.07 — "FINAL ROAD!"
Cycling Porn.
The cycling porn this week features the gear for the Hakone team. Izumida still rides his BH, Kuroda is on his Kuota, Ashikiba is on his tall Willier frame, Yuuto handles his Cervelo, and Manami is still on his sparkly Look. All their components are Shimano Dura-Ace shifters and brakes, and their shoes are still Sidi with Velcro and ratchet clasps from twelve years ago. Izumida's anticlimactic revelation of his muscular thighs' names echoes my complaint about the five-year hiatus in Yowamushi Pedal. Peter Sagan and Mark Cavendish were at the start of their careers in 2011 and at the height of their star power in 2018. In 2023, both announced their retirement from the sport of road cycling.
Sagan's anonymous performance at this year's Tour de France confirms his move to mountain biking next year. But Cavendish's close brush with breaking Eddie Merckx's Tour stage wins (both tied at 34) and a quick exit due to a broken collarbone hint at a return in 2024.
Heh.
Teshima thanks Naruko for turning into an all-rounder from his sprinter roots. Naruko has Onoda's yellow climbing power! The Big Three glow together! But Hakone's four riders all glow blue. They're in the flats between climbs, and Izumida is still with them. He went into full ab mode! Andy, Frank, and Fabian want to help too. Oh, man. Izumida named his quads: the left is Peter, and the right is Mark. Both Peter Sagan and Mark Cavendish plan to retire in 2023. They were "newborn" muscles way back in 2011.
Izumida spends his energy to the end because this is his final Inter-High race. He finished his job, so now the climbers need to do theirs. Izumida gave Hakone a 700-meter lead, so Teshima started to panic. But the Big Three smile and laugh. Is that all? So easy. They're arguing over who gets to pull first! Onoda can get half that back when the road goes up again!
Watch out! Onoda is smiling as he climbs! It will be worse for Hakone if he starts singing. Teshima has yet to see Onoda's max racing cadence above 120 rpm. THE NATIONAL CHAMPION OF JAPAN is the strongest when he rides for someone else's sake. Now it's Naruko's turn. Let's see what the Fast Man of Naniwa can do on a climb. But first, a cliffhanger on Onoda's status as the King of the Mountains. Does Teshima not want him to go for the mountain sprint line?
Next time, Teshima has sneakily clever orders. It's teatime in the mountains!
