Onoda, Sohoku, and his rivals start the final day of the Inter-High Road Race.

BREAK.01 — “The Final Day Begins!!”

Hmm.

It’s been five years since the last episode of Yowamushi Pedal! What is even happening now? We have 25 episodes to explore the details of the final day of the three-stage Inter-High road race. Will Onoda, THE NATIONAL CHAMPION OF JAPAN, win again? Will his competitors continue to underestimate him? We know that the Hakone team considers nontrivial tactics to beat him. Midousuji also watches Onoda’s moves closely. But we know how it will turn out again: a 2-up sprint against Manami on a mountaintop finish. So, settle in for two seasons of flashbacks punctuating the racing scenes. Yowamushi Pedal is back!

Cycling Porn.

Yowamushi Pedal’s cycling gear and equipment show how long ago the manga started Onoda’s story. During the anime’s five-year absence, the pro peloton added electronic shifting, disc brakes, and BOA (Boot Opening Adjustment) dial shoelaces. The bike brands are still around, but their geometry has evolved. The Corratec, Cannondale, BMC, Cervelo, Scott, and Willier bikes look much different from the 2012 models here.

Here’s a quick recap for the first two days of racing. Hakone is in the lead, followed by Sohoku and Kyofushi. Midousuji made his team shave their heads too! Manami is late, as usual. Iinchou still doesn’t understand what this bike racing is all about. But she notices Manami’s goofy face turns stark when he enters race mode.

The staggered start changes race tactics. The first five starters will wait for their teammates after the mass start. When that happens, whoever is at the front of the race is the general classification leader. Imaizumi waited for Onoda and then put on a descending clinic to catch up to Hakone.

Meanwhile, Sohoku and Hakone combine into one paceline to rejoin their leaders. Kaburagi plays the idiot so others can explain tactics to the audience. Kyofushi has a mysterious race plan, to be dramatically revealed later.

The opening and closing credits focus on Onoda’s friendships.

Next time, Midousuji employs his “piranhas.”
