On the tenth anniversary of Belgian Wouter Weylandt's death on Stage 3 of the 2011 edition of the Giro, fellow Belgian Tim Merlier won Stage 2 and gestured with a "W" to honor his memory. The peloton at the start line in Stupinigi held a moment of silence and displayed his retired number, 108, in front of the riders. At this year's edition, it's American Tejay van Garderen on EF Education-Nippo who wears bib number 109.
