#60 – “The Other Side of the Sea”
Hmm.
The first question I had during the beginning of the episode was whether we were watching a flashback or did Shingeki no Kyojin make a time skip. Reiner answered that question for me when he made a comment about being sick of walls when he saw the enemy fortress he was about to attack. The Marleyan war of expansion happens months or years into the future from the previous episode.
The best thing about seeing what’s going on the other side of the sea is that Attack on Titan finally answered my question “Why now?” Why did the Marleyan collaborators infiltrate Paradis Island? Last season, we learned how Eren’s father took advantage of their attack on the walled cities to install the Founding Titan and Attacking Titan into his son, but we didn’t know what made them attack after a hundred years of isolation. Now we know that the timeline was part of the royal line’s brainwashing, so we still need the Paradis history to match up with Grisha’s knowledge of Marley before he came over. But the question of why the Marleyans needed to attack Paradis if the “devils” successfully separated from society. I finally got my answer.
Marley needed more Eldians to make Titans, especially the missing Titan Powers of the Founding Titan and Attacking Titan. We still need to find out how and when Grisha took the Attacking Titan power before he ate the Founding Titan. The Marleyan’s expansionist war needed more Titans because the other world powers had started making effective anti-Titan weapons. War is hell, especially the trench war from World War I which traumatized the Europeans so badly. We just saw the Marleyan time skip, so the next question is what is happening on Paradis under Queen Historia. A man in a hat buying a newspaper at the end of this episode suggests that the Marleyan collaborators aren’t the only ones doing some infiltration work.
Heh.
Do I need to know who these people are? I’ll say no and just describe broad strokes. It’s total Great War tactics. Who are these people? Eldian collaborators with the Marleyans. Absolutely 2nd Class citizens. Har. This concussed Eldian somehow “remembers” Scouts flying around in 3D aerial gear. Trench warfare for four years. It’s the Great War, alright. The Marleyans fight their version of the Moroccans. Hoh! I see Reiner as a paratrooper on a zeppelin.
These opening credits are rich with Weimar Republic and Nazi iconography for the Marleyans. Imagine if the Nazis thought Jews had sacred powers instead just burning them to ash to sift for their gold fillings. Eren on top of a pile of bodies with other Titans turned to ash from an atomic bomb sets the mood for the whole final season of Shingeki no Kyojin. If this means the eradication of all Titans at the same time, that is consistent with the Japanese sentiment of abolishing all nuclear weapons. And just as childish and unserious about human nature.
The collaborator Eldians vie for election to succeed Titan Powers. Disgusting. They’ve bought into the propaganda of the Paradis Island holding devils as the source of their suffering. Even as collaborators, the Eldians excel at innovative tactics the Marleyans can’t conceive. They call the Transport Titan “Cart.” The “Jaw” Titan is someone we haven’t met yet.
A Marleyan references the plan to retake the Founding Titan nine years ago ended in failure. That’s how long it’s been since Reiner and Zeke went back to Marley. This Great War started because the Marleyans lost two of the Nine Titan powers, so they needed to postpone the subjugation of Paradis Island.
Ugh. The Eldians are suicide soldiers whether they’re strapped with explosives or turned into mindless Titans. The Armored and Beast Titan are on standby, so Reiner and Zeke are here too. This one Eldian is the successor to the Beast Titan. This gung-ho girl is supposed to be the next Armored Titan.
The “Jaw” Titan just has an armored face. It should have other powers besides that, like the Beast Titan can shout at Eldians to turn them into mindless Titans. Is one of his powers a fine head of hair and beard? Impressive! Oh crap. This zeppelin isn’t full of paratroopers. It’s full of living bombs when they all transform into Titans. There’s Zeke. There’s Reiner. The eye catch explains that Marley has seven of the Nine Titans after the Great Titan War. Which ones are missing? The Founding Titan and Attacking Titan? Those are both in Eren right now.
Here we go, here we go! Paratrooper bombs! Titans fall! Ooh. These Moroccans have anti-Titan shells. Those ant-Titan shells can penetrate the Armored Titan. The Beast Titan needs to throw stuff to take out the Moroccan navy. Har. The navy shot first! Reiner blocked enough for Zeke to unload more volleys to finish the job. That’s the familiar image of destruction from the Beast Titan. Still, that was tougher than expected. Marley needs more Titan firepower. Some guy in a hat hints that Paradis infiltrated Marley in the four years since Zeke and Reiner returned.
The preview shows a guy who looks like Hitler without a mustache. The author Hajime Isayama is too obvious.
