Episode 10 – “Gallantly, Shizuka Hiratsuka Moves Forward”
Hmm.
Oregairu dubs itself a messed up teenage romcom, which is a self-aware joke on how it’s a coming of age story instead. But sometimes this show becomes an absolute harem comedy. Hachiman is a total stud! He worked behind the scenes of the senior prom and he still had time to flirt and have romantic moments with each one of his potential partners. What a busy man! The only one missing was Gahama Mama.
On a serious note, Shizuka had her moment to blow apart Haruno’s cynical assessment of Hachiman’s relationship with Yukino and Yui. It’s not codependency if you love and help each other grow as a person. This is interdependency, the normal and healthy relationship of a family unit. Shizuka formed the Service Club to make these three teenagers develop real friendships, genuine love, and to become authentic people in their own rights where they’re honest about their intentions and feelings.
Haruno’s pronouncement of codependency for young people learning how to do these things smacks of projection and resentment that she never had the same opportunity when she grew up. She should spend more time with Shizuka and develop her own relationships.
Heh.
Iroha is greedy. She gets to monopolize Hachiman for almost the entire senior prom. She still makes her joke of refusing his future love confession but then whispers in his ear that she can be "convenient" for him. Hachiman recognized her friendly gestures. She'll still flirt and flaunt her cuteness at him, though.
It looks like Yukino organized a good senior prom version of the senior gratitude and farewell party. It's too bad Meguri didn't have a moment to spare for her number one fan Hachiman.
Yui slow danced with Hachiman! They held hands! It was a brief moment of wish fulfillment for her. It feels bittersweet because she thinks she won't have this kind of moment next year at their own senior prom.
Mrs. Yukinoshita acknowledged her daughter's accomplishment and Yukino took the moment to declare her intentions about the family business. It was very odd to do this in public with so many of popular kids watching. The important thing is how Haruno showed she cared about something. She didn't like how she might be competing for the same position with Yukino, because she cites twenty years of preparation. She must mean her student council president roles in junior and senior high school, which Yukino blew off.
Pivotal moment for Hachiman interrupted. He was about to admit that he wanted to keep working with Yui and Yukino in the Service Club. But! Yukino achieved her pivotal moment. Chasing after him and making a big show of not letting him go. Look at how gingerly and intimately Hachiman removed her hand. Lewd! This moment set up Yukino's final step in admitting her own feelings for Hachiman.
The older sister types held their own competing moments with Hachiman. Haruno claims Hachiman is still like her in that he's too self-aware to have fun in the moment. Shizuka shows Hachiman a good time in a much more natural way of imparting advice from a mentor. Hachiman needs to weight Shizuka's advice more than Haruno's. Doing things for people you love shows you care; it's not a transaction. Also, people can't change and become stronger by themselves. We're social creatures too.
Next time, Iroha gets angry about something.
