Live video coverage progresses technologically in the digital streaming age. Bad weather always highlights the analog nature of microwave video transmission on a mountain stage when the motorcycle cameras can't transmit their signals to fixed wing airplanes which then transmit those signals to broadcast trucks near the finish lines of races. Another sign was always the lack of video coverage inside a tunnel because layers of solid rock block microwave transmissions better than grounding an airplane or helicopter.
Recently, line of sight digital transmissions have made it possible for the camera crews to relay their signals to the transmission vehicles. Also, municipalities have begun to equip tunnel infrastructure to handle signals for satellite GPS and for cell transmission as well. In years past we had to rely on recorded images from cameras attached to bicycles to watch the stressful conditions of riding in a pack in a darkened tunnel, or just the words of the pro riders themselves. This is no longer the case as technology marches on.
