Like the Tour de France where the color yellow highlights every city along the route, the color pink, or rosa, in Italy shows up everywhere along the Giro d'Italia route. The original route would have started in Hungary in May, but the COVID-19 pandemic rescheduled the Giro to October, with its first four stages in Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. The 4th Stage finish town of Villafranca Tirrena festooned itself in pink, like piling old bikes painted pink into a sculpture, but more importantly the route lies near Messina, the hometown of past Giro d'Italia winner Vincenzo Nibali. Stage 5 starts on the peninsula proper of Italy at Mileto.
