The Tour's fifth stage saw no serious attempts at a breakaway because the odds were particularly low of succeeding when the conditions of crosswinds in the last 10 kilometers would allow the peloton to catch the escapees easily. The French call these riders in a breakaway a couple of terms, baroudeur, which means "adventurer," and échappé, which means "escapee." Depending on how desperate the riders seem, the two terms are almost interchangeable.
