The real villain was revealed and Hephaestion made sure his escape by attacking Hishiri, who conspired with Waver to expose their plot.



Hephaestion was a fake Heroic Spirit Class called Faker created by the El-Melloi Lord previous to Waver's predecessor, all to distract Waver as they needed to finish off a murder plot from seven years ago. It was very convoluted, as expected from such a story involving mages.

Gray herself is a fake heroic spirit, so it was doubly fitting that these two made their final blows against each other using their actual Heroic Spirits' Noble Phantasms — Iskandar's Chariot and Arturia's Lance.
