Tim Wellens of Lotto Soudal wins the last KOM finish of stage 3 ahead of eventual stage winner and new overall race leader Julian Alaphilippe.
The Tour de France is awarding intermediate time bonuses differently this year. Instead of trying to draw out GC contenders at the intermediate sprints lines, time bonuses of 8, 5, and 2 seconds are awarded to the first three across the line at the last King of the Mountain before the finish line of the 3rd, 6th, 8th, 9th, 12th, 15th, 18th, and 19th stages. Tim Wellens was the first one awarded 8 bonus seconds this way, followed by Julian Alaphilippe.
This is obviously a way of encouraging the climbing overall contenders to attack each other before the finish of a stage and animate the race, but we'll have to see if they actually take the bait with such low bonus seconds. The regular time bonus of 10, 6, and 4 seconds still applies at the end of each stage except for time trials.
