The finishing town of Val Thorens has only featured in the Tour once before, when Colombian Nelson Rodriguez won Stage 17 in 1994. Fellow Colombian Egan Bernal secured his overall victory with 2nd place overall finisher and teammate Geraint Thomas by his side. Bernal will become Colombia's first Tour de France winner when the arrives in Paris on the last stage. At 22 years of age, he was also the youngest rider in the race and was not even born yet when Nelson Rodriguez won in Val Thorens 25 years ago.
