I wrote earlier about the new way bonus seconds were placed along the route, on the last mountain pass before the finish line on designated mountain stages, and its effects were felt almost immediately. The new race leader, Giulio Ciccone of Trek-Segafredo, picked up 8 seconds at the time bonus KOM and 6 seconds by finishing 2nd on the stage, which gave him a lead of only 6 seconds over previous overall leader Julian Alaphilippe.
