Some of the Armed Detectives confront the Port Mafia directly, contrary to Fukuzawa's wishes. Atsushi and Kunikida pursue Fyodor while Mori and Fukuzawa decide to protect their organizations themselves.
Episode 35 - "Cannibalism (Part 2)"
Hmm.
There's not much to hmm about when the action hits the fan, figuratively, but this is usually when all the character development pays off and we get some satisfying moments during the action scenes. One payoff was how Kunikida stayed true to his Ideals in not fighting the Port Mafia after seeing a child blown up in his face. Ranpo gave Kunikida open confirmation that the whole operation in the slums was to break his spirit, so that he would be left out of the fight against the Rats in the House of the Dead.
Another fun moment was being fooled into thinking that Ranpo actually had a Special Ability as he provoked Chuuya. But no! Ranpo had been cultivating Edgar Alan Poe's works during their friendly contests for just such a moment! The book is even called "Black Cat in the Rue Morgue," as if Poe was trying to combine his first murder mystery novel with one of his later works. The only disappointment I can see from this plot point is from Poe himself, because Ranpo will not take "days" to get out of his book before he solves it. He just needs to keep Chuuya in there long enough to satisfy his mission.
The big awww moment of the episode was seen Akutagawa happy for Kyouka that she was happy living her life. Big bro Ryuunosuke would like to see his imouto back with the Port Mafia, but he's okay with her not being suicidal and nihilistic anymore. The takeaway from their scene was that Akutagawa needed Dazai to stop him from being self-destructive while Kyouka found Atsushi. We should no longer be shocked that Bungou Stray Dogs tips a hat in the direction of the yaoi fans.
Of course, the whole operation against the Port Mafia building was mooted by two things. First, the Lemon Runway. They really had to bring the Lemon Bomber Kajii back just to get a rise out of Yosano. The second thing was both Fukuzawa and Mori coming to the same conclusion of dueling each other to stop the fighting between the Armed Detectives and the Port Mafia. I see some extra cool moments happening here when Haruno's cat Mii shows up. There's just too much foreshadowing going on not to expect something. I'm anime only, so manga readers please hold off with all your old knowledge until next week or whenever.
Heh.
Everyone except Atsushi and Kunikida decide to defy Fukuzawa's wishes.
Ranpo knows Fyodor specifically targeted Kunikida to break his spirit.
Ranpo has a side quest for Atsushi and Kunikida - find Fyodor through Katai's investigation.
Ha. Kenji is way too strong. "Ow, that hurts," he says as hundreds of bullets have no effect on him.
O ho. Ranpo knows just how to provoke Chuuya.
Katai seems gone, video shows Fyodor shooting him, but there's got to be some trick on how his Futon ability works.
Nice. Kyouka is spooky scary as she threatens Higuchi. Higuchi must be over the moon that Akutagawa himself saved her.
Aw. Akutagawa has a soft spot for Kyouka because she was nihilistic and suicidal like he was when he was first brought into the Port Mafia.
Ranpo doesn't have a Gift, so what's he up to in goading Chuuya to attack? Wait, does he?
No! He took Edgar Alan Poe's latest book to trap him! Poe thinks Ranpo will be in there for days, but come on. Within the hour, I suspect.
Nice raccoon. Confirmation that Poe is watching.
Oh. Kyouka has some new ways of using Demon Snow, impressing and concerning Akutagawa. But Ryuunosuke has some new ways of using Rashoumon too. That movie was pretty important for this latest generation of Gifted.
Fukuzawa did not want to hear that Katai was "erased."
That Lemon Bomb guy is going crazy again. Even the Port Mafia doesn't want to deal with him.
Aw. Big bro Ryuunosuke likes the new happy Kyouka.
And both organizations find their bosses missing.
They're old friends settling this latest score to protect their "children."
Ha. Hirotsu is droll about trying to find Mori. "Let's call a detective." He knows exactly what Mori is up to and who he's with.
Ooh. Haruno and Naomi are hanging out again. That cat Mii is missing again, like he always does when there's trouble. That 's a big hint of something going to be revealed.
Dazai is awake after his surgery and he's sure some "other" is going to be involved with the missing Fukuzawa and Mori. Not really coincidentally at all, Tanizaki sees Haruno's cat Mii walking somewhere.
Mori and Fukuzawa knew where to meet, where they last worked as partners ten years ago.
And there's confirmation that Elise is just a personification of Mori's Ability Vita Sexualis.
Will Fukuzawa's power of limiting or enhancing a Gifted Person's ability work on Mori? I hope to find out exactly how his All Men Are Created Equal power operates.
Next time, I'm assuming these two old guys recognize that cat.
