10 Second Anime - Bungou Stray Dogs - Episode 29

A Port Mafia executive captures and attempts to interrogate Fyodor Dostoevsky. Fyodor has his own plans.

Episode 29 - "My Ill Deeds Are the Work of God"

Hmm.

If you ever wanted to see the Japanese version of The Usual Suspects, this is your episode. Fyodor Dostoevsky and his mysterious power Crime and Punishment get the proper introduction as the Big Bad for the next season. In case you've forgotten, Fyodor was responsible for bringing down Moby Dick and essentially crippling The Guild after Atsushi faced Fitzgerald. Little is known about his supposed group The Rats in the House of the Dead, but that's okay because we're to find out and hey, that's a nice reference to the real Dostoevsky's book.

I am so curious to see Fyodor go up against Dazai and Ranpou now that he's shown how observant, intellectually skilled, and manipulative he is. He was truly a magician in showing only what he wanted his target to see so that he could pull his trick and achieve his aims. He literally made a man hang himself because that man's personality made him believe he had figured out Fyodor's trick, but it was all for show. And it was a long con too. Man, Fyodor is good at his job, whatever that is. Here's what we know at the end of this episode - his aim is to destroy the Port Mafia and the Armed Detective Agency.

One thing I appreciated, even if it is a lazy device, is that we got ourselves a disposable character in Fodder-kun (I called him that, but I believe his name in the manga was Karma). We needed someone who could be there to explain things to the audience, as he talked with Fyodor, and to give us the big hint on how Fyodor's power actually works. Fodder-kun called himself a "villain no one would come to save," and Fyodor's power appears to give him the punishment he knows he deserves. Maybe? Probably? It will be fun to see how this all gets revealed.

Heh.

And we're back to the present. Dostoevsky has got himself captured. He doesn't seem surprised.

The opening credits reference a lot of important scenes from last season for the major characters. Thanks for catching us up.

Ace, this thirsty Port Mafia executive, wants to handle interrogating Fyodor, the leader of The Rats in the House of the Dead. Such great gang names in this show.

Ace is a good gambler. That's going to be important.

Here's a blatant attempt at trying to gain Fyodor's trust by abusing his underlings. Fyodor doesn't buy it, but it sets the table for a test of clever wills.

Fodder-kun had criminal aspirations, but now he's just stuck surviving under Ace. He knows he's a villain that nobody will come to save. Fyodor perks up at that line.

Fyodor talks openly about how his power works, but we know that all these special powered individuals keep a close check on those details. There's a game of poker going on here.

Ace is gambling with the devil. Fyodor's mind is as terrifying as Ranpou or Dazai. He literally made Ace hang himself because he thought he had a sure bet on how Fyodor's ability worked.

Nice. Last card is the Ace of Spades.

Fyodor understands the criminal mind too well. He's like an illusionist in only showing his audience what he wants them to believe.

The whole point of Fyodor's capture was to get Ace's secret notes on the abilities of the Port Mafia members. Depending on how long he's been a member, he might have notes on a whole bunch of the Armed Detectives too.

Fyodor's mission is Punishment.

And Fodder-kun died. Killed by the punishment he thought he deserved?

Uh oh. Fyodor isn't just going after the Port Mafia, but the Armed Detective Agency too. There's going to be lots of yakking to justify that quest.

Maybe he thinks he's already taken out the Guild? That's effectively true from last season.

The end credits show lots of emotional scenes from past episodes too. Lets get to scenes with Atsushi and Kyouka already!
