Sylvain Chavanel waves to the crowd, and his team manager celebrating his birthday, during Stage 2 of the Tour de France in the Vendée region.
Making his record breaking 18th appearance in a Tour de France, Sylvain Chavanel won the combative award after spending almost the entire day in a solo breakaway. While 18 is the most successful starts of a Tour, Chavanel still has to break George Hincapie's record of most individual Tour stage starts at 353; Chava only has 350 at this point. Also, if Chavanel finishes his final Tour de France of his career, he will only tie the record of 16 complete Tours de France. That record is held by Dutchman Joop Zoetemelk, whose last Tour was in 1986.
