Onoda meets Toudou riding at night, who is on his way to reunite with his friend and rival Makishima.
Line.24 - "The Small Pass"
Hmm.
Okay, let me get this out of my system first.
I'm not crying! You're crying! *sheds more man tears, sniff*
One thing I liked besides all the A Grade Quality Toudou (thanks, I'm full up for another year), was how Onoda got to geek out at veteran climbers. This year, not only is he the mentor to the younger riders, but he's also THE NATIONAL CHAMPION OF JAPAN and the best climber on his team. He has no one to top him off on climbing nakama fuel, which is why his bromance partner Manami is all the more important.
Toudou is very perceptive, as is Makishima, and they both noticed how down Onoda was about not getting to race Manami for the mountain sprint line. Makishima noticed his lack of nakama golden fire in his letters because of Climbing God status too. The shouts of "Jinpachi! Maki-chan!" filled Onoda's tank right up, along with Makishima's advice to win in his own style, and Toudou was almost regretting it, since he wants Manami to win whatever climbing contest pits him against his own rival.
Still, he prefers it this way, which is in contrast to Midousuji's methods. The Sohoku-Hakogaku rivalry is based on the premise that racing the best, at their best, is the best! Let's hope that all plays out for Onoda and Manami on the last day of racing.
Heh.
This hasn't happened in a while - so much story to tell there wasn't even a two minute recap.
Is Toudou riding a borrowed bike? He wouldn't change bike brands from Ridley to Argon 18, would he?
I've seen Argon 18 in the peloton, but I don't remember who was riding it.
Ha! Onodo thinks Toudou is still cool. Toudou agrees!
Well, we all know who Toudou is going to see on the night time ride up a mountain.
Give him more compliments, Onoda. He's faster and cooler than last year... He really hasn't changed.
Look at this racing intuition. Onoda knows who's up the road.
Yes! Of course it was Makishima. Both Toudou and Onoda missed him so much.
Man, I missed this bromance too. You can tell Toudou is excited by how he keeps screaming "Maki-chan," but listen to Makishima's coughing laugh too. Aw, that's the stuff.
Did Makishima borrow a bike too? That Trek looks awfully familiar...
Race! Toudou's Sleeping Climb has gotten a little better. His feints are sometimes successful.
And it's already over? No way...
Um, they're going downhill an awfully long time... because a descent is also an ascent! Race again!
Ha! Onoda is no good at U-turns. I'll talk a bit about that in the next section.
You know, if Onoda is catching up to them to watch the race, that means he's also faster than they are. He is THE NATIONAL CHAMPION OF JAPAN after all.
And after 6 races, Makishima wins on the last climb.
No one would know about this race on an unnamed small pass? Kids, let me tell you about a social media app called Strava. Somebody local is the king of that little mountain pass and if Toudou and Makishima had used the app on their smartphones, one of them might have become the new KOM.
Hee. Manami can see the racing going on. He knows who's up there. Now he just needs to figure out how to get rid of his "minders."
Toudou is such a good guy. He knows when to be quiet as Onoda is pouring out his heart to Makishima, saying all the things Toudou feels too.
The movie from a couple of years ago mashed up Maikishima's departure and his reunion with Onoda, so it's nice to see Makishima reading Onoda's letters in the original story's context.
Hey, first years. Manami is not twirling a toothbrush. He's twirling a Best Boy cap he got from Mrs. Onoda.
And he's gone out the window. Looks like Onoda is going to have another night time visitor. Fujoshi better pick themselves up from all the Jinpachi X Makishima X Onoda goodness.
Next time, season finale! Right on schedule for having the third stage start right at the end.
And Izumida gets the last end card for the individual team members. The final one should be fun.
Cycling Porn.
It was all about borrowed bikes, Argon 18 and Trek for Toudou and Makishima, along with Onoda's BMC. Makishima says he borrowed Kinjou's bike, but Toudou had to borrow his kit and bike. Onoda thought he looked cool, but both Toudou and Makishima didn't care for the jersey's style. And kicking it old school with the gear shift spark was Makishima.
Let's talk about those U-turns! I actually use that radical maneuver for when I have to stop really fast, like at an intersection when I car decides to trump my right-of-way. As you saw with Onoda above, he totally got the mechanics of it wrong. The foot you unclip is going to be the inside pivot. First, it lets you change your center of gravity to that side of the bike, letting you really lean in for a tight turn, and second, you can place that foot down and spin around it like a top. Onoda chose his outside foot to clip out, which is why he almost fell, and just had to do a total reset with a standing start.
