Much of the race on a Grand Tour stage can be boring with nothing to concentrate on but the whirring of wheels and the slight grind of a bike chain for hours. Joking, mugging for the moto cameras and catching up with colleagues in a patois of English, French, Italian and Spanish is pretty much all 190 riders can do before they decide to catch the breakaway and race for the finale.
