Natsumi catches a fish, dresses up and cooks mocchi with Hikage.
Episode 9 - "We Looked at the Moon Together"
Heh.
Natsumi was the star of this episode and her personality quirks animated the plot and comedy. She's got a talent for bringing people together and for getting in trouble and when you put those two talents together you get a huge carp in your pond.
Capturing the boss of the lake was alluded to in the first season but the actual events were hilarious!
Now we know - if Natsumi isn't too excited about doing something, offer her money.
I laughed hard when she turned on a dime when her mom said that she'd pay her to catch something to put in the empty pond.
The Koshigaya mother has a well-deserved reputation for being angry, but I think it's mainly because of Natsumi's antics.
Renge shock! It's always noteworthy when a six-year old learns that her conceptions of the world don't always match up with reality. Don't look so surprised that saltwater fish don't live in a freshwater lake, Renge. Although, her chain of puns turning into May Day was a welcome bit of chaos to ratchet up the comedy.
Poor Nii-san. The bigger the girl, the bigger the fish, the bigger the fish slap. Renge, the smallest girl, caught clams, so no fish slap from her.
Renge wanted to call the big fish ひかりもの おやかた (hikarimono oyakata). Now, oyakata means boss, which is fitting enough, but hikarimono can mean like a shooting star, any bright metal, or sliced fish with silver skin left on. She might have been calling the new pond dweller the fresh catch of the day!

I appreciate the continuity in this show. Konomi, one of the older girls who already graduated high school with Candy Store Lady, was barely introduced to this season last week, but this week she played a key part of Natsumi's story.
Oh, Konomi. Making inadvertent jokes about Komori needing to wear grade school size clothes.
Natsumi was chou kawaii, but she'd rather pose as a farmer for posterity.
Natsumi learned a life lesson - it's not the crime; it's the cover up that gets you in trouble.
The pairing with Hikage had doom written all over it. Natsumi was definitely the heir to Hikage's role of mischief master, but putting them together caused a minor lapse over snacks in the fridge to spiral into a major looming disaster of dashed hopes and dreams. Don't get between girls and their moon-viewing dango!
This is what happens when you have two boke instead one tsukkomi with a boke. This is a Japanese traditional comedy pairing, the idiot and the straight man. But when you have two idiots, common sense is in short supply and things just keep escalating.
This didn't seem to be too harsh of a punishment for eating the all the dango accidentally.
This group of girls sure do like roasting rice dough...
I think Hikage was quicker on the uptake that they just should have apologized immediately, but I think that came with experience in dealing with the consequences of getting in trouble. Without a straight man, she went along with Natsumi's boke flow.
Natsumi said she gets better by being praised, but the sensible Komari doesn't want her to make her head too big. After the dango episode, I don't think she has to worry about that.
